Appendix C: Sports Information Operating Code (Awards process)
Section 1. Conference Awards
- The assistant commissioner for media relations/conference information director shall coordinate the nominating, balloting and announcement process of the all-conference teams in each sport.
- The assistant commissioner for media relations/conference information director shall coordinate the balloting and announcement process for Coach of the Year in each sport.
- The assistant commissioner for media relations/conference information director shall coordinate the all-conference and coach of the year processes with the sports information directors of each member institution.
- Head coaches shall have the primary opportunity to nominate and vote for all-conference teams and coach of the year; however, if coaches are not available, the responsibility shall fall to the sports information director.
- Each member institution shall have an opportunity to nominate its own student-athletes for the all-conference teams (for sports they sponsor).
- Every head coach shall be listed on the Coach of the Year ballot. There is no nominating process.
- Freshman of the Year is defined as any student-athlete who is a freshman or red-shirt freshman.
- Newcomer of the Year is presented to a sophomore, junior or senior in his/her first year of competition in the PacWest. (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
- The PacWest shall name a Men’s and Women’s Athlete of the Year voted upon by the sports information directors of the conference. The ballot will consist of the athletes of the year for each sport. (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
A. Baseball
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team and Second Team consisting of the following positions: 1st Base, 2nd Base, Shortstop, 3rd Base, Outfield (3 per team), Catcher, Pitcher (2 per team), Relief Pitcher, and Designated Hitter.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one player for each position (Exception: two pitchers and three outfielders may be nominated).
- The all-conference team shall be determined in a weighted voting process per position with the top vote recipient being named First Team and the runner-up being named Second Team.
- The conference shall name a Player, Pitcher, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- The pitcher with the highest number of all-conference votes shall be named the Pitcher of the Year.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one student-athlete for each of the following awards - Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year. Any position player - including pitchers - shall be eligible for these awards.
- The Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
B. Basketball (Men's)
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team, Second Team and an Honorable Mention listing
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate student-athletes from its team
- The all-conference team shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the Top 7 vote recipients being named First Team. Vote recipients ranked 8-14 shall be named Second Team. Any nominee receiving a vote shall be name Honorable Mention.
- The conference shall name a Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- The student-athlete with the highest all-conference vote total shall be named the Player of the Year.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one student-athlete for each of the following awards - Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- The Newcomer and Freshman of the Year shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
C. Basketball (Women's)
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team, Second Team and an Honorable Mention listing
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate student-athletes from its team

- The conference shall name a Coach, Runner, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year following the NCAA Division II National Championships.
- Runner of the Year – During the week prior to the conference championship meet, each school will have an opportunity to submit a nomination for Runner of the Year. Voting will take place on-site immediately following the PacWest Championship. The coaches will vote for the award ranking their Top 3 selections in order (they may not vote for their own player). The top votegetter will be named the PacWest Runner of the Year. (Approved Oct. 4, 2011)
- Coach of the Year – A ballot listing each PacWest head coach will be presented to the cross country head coaches on-site immediately following the PacWest Championship. The coaches will vote for the award ranking their Top 3 selections in order (they may not vote for themselves). The top votegetter will be named the PacWest Coach of the Year. (Approved Oct. 4, 2011)
- Freshman of the Year – the highest finishing freshman during the PacWest Championship race. (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)

G. Golf (Women's) (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
If and when the PacWest adds women’s golf as an official conference sport, the awards process will mirror the men’s golf awards process.
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team and Second Team.
- The Top 7 finishers at the PacWest Championship shall be named First Team. Players finishing 8-14 shall be named Second Team.
- The conference shall name a Coach, Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- Golfer of the Year – During the week prior to the conference championship meet, each school will have an opportunity to submit a nomination for Golfer of the Year. H. Soccer (Men's)

- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate up to 10 student-athletes from its team (with the exception of a goalkeeper - see section 5). The nominations will be in the form of 4 forwards, 4 midfielders and 3 defenders.
- The all-conference team shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the Top 10 vote recipients (top 4 forwards, top 4 midfielders, top 3 defenders) being named First Team. Vote recipients ranked 11-20 (second 4 forwards, second 4 midfielders, second 3 defenders) shall be named Second Team. Nominees ranked 21-30 (final 4 forwards, final 4 midfielders, final 3 defenders) shall be name Honorable Mention.
- The conference shall name a Player, Goalkeeper, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year. Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one student-athlete for each award. Each award winner shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
- In the voting process for the Goalkeeper of the Year, the recipient with the most votes also shall be named First Team; the recipient with the second most votes shall be named Second Team; and the recipient with the third most votes shall be named Honorable Mention.
- The conference shall name a Coach of the Year. No nomination will be necessary. Each head coach will be placed on the ballot. Each award winner shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
I. Soccer (Women's)
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team, Second Team and an Honorable Mention listing in the following manner - 4 forward, 4 midfielders, 3 defenders for each team.

- The conference shall name a Player, Pitcher, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.

K. Tennis (Men’s) (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
If and when the PacWest adds men’s tennis as an official conference sport, the awards process will mirror the women’s tennis awards process.
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team and Second Team.
- The all-conference team shall be based upon the last ITA Regional Rankings prior to the NCAA Division II regional playoffs. The ITA ranks 15 singles players and 10 doubles teams in the region.
- The Top 6 PacWest singles players and the Top 3 PacWest doubles teams in the region shall be named First Team All-Conference.
- All other PacWest singles players and doubles teams remaining in the Top 15 shall be named Second Team.
- The conference shall name a Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year following the NCAA Division II National Championships.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one student-athlete for each award.
- The Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
L. Tennis (Women’s)
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team and Second Team.
- The all-conference team shall be based upon the last ITA Regional Rankings prior to the NCAA Division II regional playoffs. The ITA ranks 15 singles players and 10 doubles teams in the region.
- The Top 6 PacWest singles players and the Top 3 PacWest doubles teams in the region shall be named First Team All-Conference.
- All remaining PacWest singles players in the Top 15 and doubles teams remaining in the Top 10 shall be named Second Team.
- The conference shall name a Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year following the NCAA Division II National Championships.

- The Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
M. Volleyball
- The conference shall name an all-conference First Team, Second Team and an Honorable Mention listing.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate student-athletes from its team.
- The all-conference team shall be determined in a weighted voting process per position with the Top 6 vote recipients being named First Team. Vote recipients ranked 7-12 shall be named Second Team. Vote recipients ranked 13-18 shall be named Honorable Mention.
- The conference shall name a Player, Libero, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- The student-athlete with the highest all-conference vote total shall be named the Player of the Year.
- Each institution shall have the opportunity to nominate one student-athlete for each of the following awards - Libero, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year.
- The Libero, Newcomer and Freshman of the Year shall be determined in a weighted voting process with the top vote recipient being named the award winner.
Section 2. Academic Awards
- The PacWest will shall name a Scholar Athlete of the Year in each conference-sponsored sport that is voted upon by the sports information directors of the PacWest. (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
- The PacWest shall name a Men’s and Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. The ballot will consist of the scholar athletes of the year for each sport and will be voted upon by the sports information directors (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
- In each sport, each member institution shall provide the conference office with a list of its student athletes who meet the following minimum qualifications. All student athletes meeting the minimum requirements will be named to the PacWest Academic All-Conference Team. (Approved Sept. 16, 2010)
- Must be from a conference-sponsored sport
- Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
- The list must be submitted by June 15 of each calendar year.
Section 3. Certificates & Plaques
- The conference team champion shall receive a championship plaque. In case of ties, duplicate plaques shall be awarded.
- Plaques will be presented to the coach and all athletes of the year in each sport. Athletes of the year include freshman, newcomer, academic and sport specific honors (see individual sports for details).
- Certificate shall be awarded to each student-athlete named to the all-conference team.
- Certificates shall be awarded to each student-athlete earning an athlete of the week award.
