Dominican University of California’s Brandon Davis named PacWest SID of the Year

Brandon Davis PHOENIX, AZ – For his outstanding efforts in the sports information field, Dominican University of California’s Brandon Davis has been selected as the 2011-12 Pacific West Conference Sports Information Director of the Year.

On a typical workday, which normally begins for him at his office on campus as senior graphics designer, Davis will organize his student workstudy force for Penguins’ home athletic events.

Or set up tables and sound systems. Or erect a tent. Or tweet.

Or he might arrange media interviews. Or print out and distribute pre-game rosters. Or change the nets or a light bulb.

Or he might take photographs or a turn at being public address announcer. Or compose and hand out box scores. Or post stories and design Dominican’s athletics website.

Or he might even drive the team bus. Or drive a fan off the field.

“Brandon’s quality of work and his growth as a sports information director really was evident this year,” Tom Di Camillo, the PacWest assistant commissioner for media relations and 2011-12 president of the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) said. “When you see young, talented people in this profession who thrive on the challenges of such a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, it is outstanding to be able to honor them with an award like PacWest SID of the Year.”

Whatever Brandon Davis – who also is known as BDave - ends up doing for Dominican on any given day, it will involve multi-tasking and many responsibilities, most of them while wearing a suit and tie.

Brandon Davis His ability to juggle all things that are Dominican – including the demands of his superiors in marketing and athletics while doing so in a timely, friendly and professional manner - is a gift.

“Brandon is the driving force for promoting the persona of our brand and how we present ourselves in outreach to the community,” Terry Tumey, the former Dominican’s director of athletics, said. “We owe a debt of gratitude to Brandon for making us a viable entity across the board. This award is not only amazing, but it is well deserved. We are proud of what he does and accomplishes.”

Davis’ dedication to game day operations is tied to his devotion to the university. He graduated from Dominican in 2006 with a B.A. in digital art. He was team manager for the Penguins’ men’s basketball team that won the California Pacific Conference championship for four consecutive seasons. He also spent time as the assistant to the sports information director before becoming Dominican’s SID at the beginning of his senior year at the university.

Upon graduating, Davis assumed the role of SID and marketing assistant. He worked his way up to junior graphic designer and moved to Dominican's marketing department full-time as the university's senior graphic designer for a semester.

A member of CoSIDA, Davis currently serves as both sports information director for the university’s 12 athletics teams and as the university’s senior graphic designer.

A graduate of Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland where he still resides, Davis is an avid sports fan, particularly of the Oakland A’s. He also plays on rec softball and basketball teams when he finds the time.

“As a former sportswriter for newspapers in four different states from Maine to California, Brandon is among the most hard-working, versatile and accommodating SIDs I have worked with,” Dave Albee, associate director of public relations at Dominican, said. “He is a consummate team player whose considerable effort and skills make a big difference at Dominican and in the PacWest.”
