CBU’s 4-1 win over Grand Canyon in women’s soccer spurs three-title day in Arizona for Lancers
PHOENIX, AZ – California Baptist used a 4-1 victory
at Grand Canyon on Saturday, Oct. 29, to clinch a share of the 2011
Pacific West Conference women’s soccer title and give the
Lancers three PacWest titles in one day.
And all three occurred in the greater Phoenix area.
Now in its first year of PacWest competition, California Baptist captured its inaugural title at approximately 8:30 a.m. MST when the Lancers claimed the 2011 Women’s Cross Country Championship.
The race was held in Estrella Mountain Regional Park in Goodyear, AZ, just west of the city of Phoenix and saw the Lancers claimed six All-PacWest awards after a half-dozen of its runners finished in the Top 14.
By approximately 9:15 a.m., the CBU men’s cross country team was hoisting the PacWest trophy after the Lancers claimed their first men’s crown by winning the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Cross Country Championship. The 8K race also was held in Estrella Mountain Regional Park and saw seven Lancer runners make the Al-PacWest squad.
By Saturday evening, the California Baptist women’s soccer team was rolling to a three-goal victory that left the Lancers with a 9-1-1 PacWest mark and 28 points on the season. Even if CBU drops its final contest vs. Dixie State, the best that BYU-Hawaii (22 points, 7-2-1 PacWest) and Grand Canyon (25 points, 8-2-1) can do is tie for the title if they capture their remaining contests. The Antelopes have one game left, while the Seasiders have two contests on their schedule.
Fabiola da Silva scored a goal and added an assist in the opening period to help stake the Lancers to a 3-0 lead at Grand Canyon and ultimately a share of the PacWest title.
Kylee Nicassio and Kitra Walters also tallied first-half goals. Grand Canyon tallied a score at 44:02 thanks to Jessica Brillantes, but the Lancers struck late in the second half on Amanda Lammers goal at 87:03.
