BYU-Hawaii’s Scott Lowe selected 2010-11 PacWest SID of the Year

Scott Lowe PHOENIX, AZ – For his outstanding efforts in the sports information field, BYU-Hawaii Scott Lowe has been selected as the 2010-11 Pacific West Conference Sports Information Director of the Year.

The PacWest announced the award on Monday, Aug. 22, from its media office n Phoenix, Ariz.

"I am very honored by this award,” Lowe, who also serves as the head softball coach for the Seasiders, said. “This conference has some of the finest SID's in the country and to be singled out amongst this group is really a significant honor."

The PacWest SID of the Year award recognizes a sports information director or assistant SID in the conference whose work during the course of the year exemplifies the professionalism and passion for the sports information field. Former Hawai‘i Pacific University SID John Barry, who now is an assistant at Division I University of Hawai‘i, captured the inaugural award in 2010.

“Scott is very experienced and helpful,” Ken Wagner, BYU-Hawaii’s director of athletics and men’s basketball coach, said. “He has been an important part of our program for years. He has helped promote the university, the athletes, and the coaches - a well deserved honor.”

Dr. Steven C. Wheelwright, the president of BYU-Hawaii, echoed Wagner’s comments.

“We are very pleased with this honor and join with the entire Pacific West Conference in congratulating Scott on his recognition as PacWest Sports Information Director of the Year,” he said. “Over the years, Scott has seen plenty of winning from our Seasider teams, and has done great work in helping our programs and student athletes succeed. There are few people who know sports and love sports like Scott does - and we appreciate his contributions to BYU-Hawaii and the conference.”

Lowe has served as the sports information director at BYU-Hawaii in Laie since 1997, but it is just one of many titles he has worn or continues don. He became the assistant athletic director in 2005 and the head softball coach in 2009.

Since 1997, Lowe has served as the media room manager for the ESA Sports Maui Invitational (Kemper Sports Marketing). He is responsible for maintaining the media room during college’s premier preseason basketball tournament, and providing stats and assistance to nationwide media during the event.

For three years he served as the PacWest sports information director and also doubled as BYU-Hawaii’s media relations director from 1997-2000.

Before arriving in Hawai‘i, Lowe was the media distribution manager for 10 years (1987-97) at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colo., where he oversaw the TV distribution system, video research and acquisition, television productions, student advising, teleconferencing, writing, promotions, copyright regulations and audio production.

He also taught communications and physical education classes at Aims from 1995-97 and was an associate producer and broadcast announcer from 1988-97 with Scripps/Howard Cable (today known as Comcast). He was a consultant/distributor from 1992-1997 with Wild Card of Greeley, Colo., where he wrote ad copy, contracts and training materials, and participated in fund-raising efforts.

Lowe’s vast experience includes working as an insurance adjustor, stockbroker, heart/lung machine technician, copier and office products technician, newspaper proof runner, and an independent roofing contractor. He was an electronics technician in the United State Navy and served as a missionary for the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Lowe earned his B.A. degree in broadcast journalism at the University of Northern Colorado in 1995. In 1987 he obtained his A.A. degree in communications media from Aims Community College.

Lowe has been a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America since 1997 and has served on multiple national committees since joining the organization. He is currently the vice-chair of the Committee on Committees.

He is active in many church and community activities, and has held ordained church leadership positions. His volunteer service includes:
