Dominican basks in PacWest Community Engagement, Academic Achievement awards

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Pacific West Conference Commissioner Bob Hogue was in attendance at Friday’s PacWest volleyball opener between Dominican University of California and visiting Dixie State College. Between sets, Hogue presented Dominican with the 2009-10 Community Engagement and Academic Achievement Awards.

On hand to accept the Academic Achievement Award, which is awarded to the PacWest school with the highest student-athlete GPAs, were Dominican President Joseph R. Fink, Director of Athletics Terry Tumey, Faculty Forum Chair Dr. Christian Dean, Associated Student Body President Mark Lewis, Penguin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (PSAAC) President Mike Wells, and 2009-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Esera Vegas.

The Penguins recorded the conference’s highest grade point average at 3.21 in just their first year of conference membership.

Dominican head women’s basketball coach Brianna Chambers, who serves as the advisor to the PSAAC, got the crowd of 300 to its feet as the PSAAC accepted the Community Engagement Award from Hogue.

Dominican student-athletes raised the highest total of Make-A-Wish donations among all PacWest schools. The Penguin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (PSAAC ) raised $2,285.25 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America last school year through donations at sporting events, the “Mr. Penguin 2010” pageant, and hosting a Blacklight Dance.

The Dominican University of California Department of Athletics is in NCAA Division II provisional status and in its second season as a member of the PacWest. The Penguins sponsor 12 teams, including men and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, and soccer; men’s lacrosse; and women’s softball, tennis, and volleyball.
