UPR-Mayaguez routs UPR-Rio Piedras 20-7 in LWS consolation contest

St. GEORGE, UT - University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez used a seven-run third inning to speed by the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras 20-7 on Saturday morning in the consolation game of the Pacific West Conference Little World Series.

The four-day PacWest Little World Series is being hosted by Dixie State College in St. George, UT, from May 6-9. Saturday marked the final day of competition.

Mayaguez and Rio Piedras entered the contest with identical 0-2 records in the tournament. Mayaguez took the early lead with three runs in the first inning, but the Gallistos posted a five-spot in the second to jump ahead by two at 5-3.

However, the seven-run third by Mayaguez began a string of scoring in each inning through the seventh. The 20-7 lead invoked the 10-run mercy rule after seven innings.

David Negron went 3 for 5 with four runs scored and three RBI for Mayaguez, while teammate Richard Ramirez was 3 for 6 with two runs scored and one RBI. Elvin Acosta went 2 for 5 with three runs batted in and four runs scored.

Norman Krause went 2 for 4 with two runs scored for Rio Piedras.
