HPU's Nooij and Takahashi earn PacWest accolades
HPU's Nooij, Takahashi claim weekly baseball honors
PHOENIX, AZ - Hawai‘i Pacific senior Bas Nooij (Landsmeer, Newfoundland, Canada/Caland Lyceum) and junior pitcher Micah Takahashi (Honolulu, HI/Kalani) have been named the Pacific West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week.
The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Feb. 22, for games contested Feb. 15-21.
Nooij led HPU to a 5-2 week by hitting .500. He was 7 for 14 with six runs scored, two homers, eight RBI and a .929 slugging percentage.
He also had a .650 on-base rate, walked once and reached base after being hit by a pitch five times.
Takahashi posted a pair of victories in two starts during the week. He earned a 9-6 win over Hawai‘i Hilo on Feb. 15 and claimed a 6-1 complete-game win over Pacific (OR) on Feb. 21.
Takahashi produced a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings of work. He struck out three while allowing just four earned runs and one walk.

Brett Adams - Dixie State (Sr., 6-4, 215, OF, R/R, Sandy,
UT/Alta)...hit .462 in four starts during a weekend
series at Grand Canyon...was 6 for 13 with four runs scored, a
double, a homer and three RBI...walked and was hit by a
pitch...stole a base...had a .769 slugging percentage and a .533
on-base rate.
Colin Courtland - Grand Canyon (Sr., 6-3, 245, 1B, R/R, Litchfield Park, AZ/Millennium)...helped the Antelopes to a 3-1 weekend series vs. Dixie State in PacWest opener for both clubs...hit .500 in four games and three starts...was 4 for 8 with three runs scored, two home runs and four RBI...walked three times...had a 1.250 slugging mark and a .636 on-base rate.
P.J. Garcia - Grand Canyon (So., 5-11, 180, SS, L/R, Phoenix, AZ/Thunderbird)...led the Antelopes to a 3-1 weekend series vs. Dixie State in PacWest opener for both clubs...batted .556 in four starts, going 5 for 9 at the plate...scored twice, doubled, drove in four runs and had a .667 slugging mark...also had a .615 on-base percentage...walked twice and reached base after being hit by a pitch...dropped a sacrifice bunt and had a sacrifice fly.
Jay Green - Grand Canyon (So., 5-11, 180, SS, L/R, Phoenix,
AZ/Thunderbird)...batted .571 in four-game series vs.
Dixie State...GCU went 3-1...was 4 for 7 with four runs, two RBI,
and five walks...had a .571 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base
rate.
John Hoffman - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 6-0, 180, C/OF, R/R, Pagosa Springs, CO/Pagosa Springs)...helped Vulcans split a non-conference doubleheader with HPU on Feb. 15 by batting 1.000 in two games...was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI, two walks and a run scored...had a 2.000 slugging mark and a 1.000 on-base percentage.
John Holley - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-1, 215, P, R/R, Pahoa, HI/Pahoa)...tossed six innings of solid ball to earn 7-2 win over HPU on Feb. 15...allowed two earned runs, scattered five hits, and struck out six Sea Warriors...had a 3.00 ERA.
Lane Kirby - Dixie State (Jr., 6-0, 185, P, R/R, Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde)...earned a 7-3 victory in relief vs. Grand Canyon on Feb. 20...marked the lone win of the series for the Red Storm...allowed just one earned run and five hits in 4.1 innings of work...struck out three...permitted a 2.08 earned run average.
Kale Sumner - Hawai‘i Pacific (Fr., 5-11, 190, IF, R/R,
Kailua, HI/Kailua)...hit .429 in seven starts for the
Sea Warriors during the week...went 9 for 21 with three runs
scored, five RBI, three doubles and a home run...posted a .714
slugging mark and a .538 on-base rate...walked four times and
reached base after being hit by a pitch...stole a base.
Jeff Urlaub - Grand Canyon (Sr., 6-1, 195, P, L/L, Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon)...earned a 4-2 victory over Dixie State on Feb. 19...tossed a complete-game, seven-inning victory...posted a 2.57 ERA in lone start of the week...allowed just two earned runs while scattering eight hits...struck out five without yielding a walk.
Chris Vargas - Academy of Art (Jr., 5-11, 245, IF, L/R, Foster City, CA/Junipero)...became first Urban Knight baseball player in school history to earn place on PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll...hit .571 in two starts for AAU...was 4 for 7 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a .714 slugging rate...also had an on-base average of .625.
