12 PacWest baseball players named to 2012 NCBW All-West Region Team
DALLAS, TX – Twelve players from the Pacific West
Conference have been selected to the 2012 National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) All-West Region Team.
The honor was released on May 16 from the organization’s location in Dallas, TX. Three PacWest players earned First Team honors, while four were named to the Second Team and five were selected as Honorable Mention.
The PacWest Co-Newcomers of the Year, Grand Canyon junior OF Derek Mendoza (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) and California Baptist senior 2B Kevin Odom (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union) were named to the First Team.
Mendoza, who also earned an All-PacWest First Team selection, hit .407 on the season. He was 70 for 172 with 29 runs scored, 16 doubles, two homers, 16 walks and a .535 slugging rate.
Odom batted .374 in 47 starts for the Lancers in 2012, going 55 for 147 with 52 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples, six homers, 39 RBI, 29 walks, eight stolen bases and a .599 slugging rate. He also was hit 22 times by pitches and produced a phenomenal .533 on-base average.

Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis),
California Baptist junior DH Matt Marnati (Yucaipa,
CA/Yucaipa) and Grand Canyon junior 1B
Michael Pomeroy (Peoria, AZ/Centennial)
– each earned a place on the All-West Region Team. The three
players were named to the PacWest First Team this season.
Marnati claimed an All-West Region First Team honor by going 71 for 194 at the plate, hitting .366 in 50 games. He scored 49 runs, ripped 23 doubles, hit three homers and drove in 51 runs – all while compiling a .531 slugging rate, a .412 on-base mark and 11 stolen bases.
Andrade and Pomeroy were selected to the All-West Region Second Team for their outstanding seasons. Andrade, who is competing in the NCAA II West Regional with the Red Storm, is hitting .324 in 51 games and 50 starts for the Dixie State. He has 59 base hits, 28 runs scored, 15 doubles, 45 runs batted in, four homers, 16 walks and a .473 slugging rate.
Pomeroy completed his outstanding season hitting .422 in 50
starts, going 79 for 187 with 45 runs, 14 doubles, a triple, 28 RBI
and a .508 slugging mark. He also walked 16 times and stole eight
bases.
Hawai‘i Pacific junior hurler Michael Murray (Castle Rock, WA/Castle Rock) was named to the All-West Region Second Team after receiving All-PacWest First Team accolades. Murray completed his 2012 campaign with a 9-3 record in 13 starts, including one shutout, 61 strikeouts and a .229 opponent batting average in 94.2 innings of action.
CBU rookie OF Andy Crowley (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) – the PacWest Freshman of the Year and A PacWest First Team choice – earned All-West Region Second Team honors as well. He hit .394 in 48 games and 43 starts, going 63 for 160 with 37 runs, nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 35 RBI. He also had a .513 slugging mark, 13 walks and eight stolen bases.
California Baptist junior hurler Jon Bengard (Moreno Valley, CA/Canyon Springs) claimed Honorable Mention accolades on the All-West Region Team. He was the PacWest Pitcher of the Year and an All-PacWest First Team selection.
Bengard owns a 3.18 earned run average and a 10-2 record that he
compiled in 12 starts and 13 appearances. He has thrown 73.2
innings this season, producing 65 strikeouts while allow a .230
batting average and just nine extra-base hits.
Dixie State junior pitcher Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View), an All-PacWest First Team selection, also received All-West Region Honorable Mention accolades. Dedrick is presently 6-4 with a 2.95 ERA in 14 starts and 15 appearances. He has struck out 54 in 88.1 innings of work, allowing opponents to hit just .246 against his pitching.
Hawai‘i Pacific senior OF Blake Amaral (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i) concluded his stellar career by earning All-West Region Honorable Mention.
Amaral, one of the most decorated players in the short PacWest baseball history, batted .358 in 49 starts this season after going 68 for 190 with 36 runs, 14 doubles, four triples, a quartet of home runs, 45 RBI, 12 walks and a .537 slugging rate. He also stole six bases and produced a .421 on-base average.
Amaral finishes his career as a four-time All-PacWest First Team selection, earning the award at first base in 2009, 2010 and 2012, and as a designated hitter in 2011. He was named the PacWest Newcomer & Freshman of the Year in 2009.
California Baptist sophomore OF Zach Esquerra (La Habra, CA/La Habra), who was an All-PacWest Second Team selection, earned All-West Region Honorable Mention for his stellar campaign. He hit .326 in 48 games and 41 starts for the Lancers after going 46 for 141 with 35 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 23 walks, 45 RBI and a .631 slugging mark.
California Baptist sophomore 3B Blair Moore (Riverside, CA/Poly) – an All-PacWest First Team member – was an All-West Region Honorable Mention as well. Moore hit .377 in 48 games and 47 starts. He was 60 for 159 with 47 runs, 48 RBI, nine doubles, two triples and six home runs. He also walked 26 times, posted a .572 slugging mark, and unleashed a .487 on-base rate.
