Dixie State clinches second PacWest baseball title in three years
PHOENIX, AZ – Dixie State coupled a doubleheader
split with Grand Canyon on Friday, April 22, with a split between
Hawai‘i Pacific and Hawai‘i Hilo to claim its second
Pacific West Conference baseball championship in three years.
The Red Storm completed its conference schedule with a 22-10 record – two games ahead of HPU in the loss column – to reclaim the league title it originally won in 2009.
The Sea Warriors own a share of second place with a 16-12 PacWest mark and need one win during their upcoming four-game set vs. Academy of Art to take second place outright.
If the Sea Warriors were to lose all four games to Art U, then HPU and Grand Canyon would be tied for second place with 16-16 PacWest records.
Hawai‘i Hilo could make it a three-way tie for second place in that scenario if the Vulcans then were to sweep the Urban Knights in their four-game series.
At 6-18, Academy of Art is in fifth place with a mathematical chance to move into fourth. The Urban Knights would have to sweep UHH and take three of four at HPU to move up a notch.
In 2009, during the inaugural PacWest baseball season, the Red Storm registered a 15-9 league mark and a 33-19 overall record, edging HPU by a game for the conference title.
Last season the Sea Warriors finished 27-4 in the PacWest and outdistanced Dixie State who finished second at 19-13.
