BYU-Hawaii’s Marques Whippy leads nation in rebounding; 4 PacWest teams in region poll
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Pacific West Conference set
a league record by landing more than half of its eligible teams in
the latest NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball West Region
Poll.
BYU-Hawaii, Dixie State, Chaminade and Grand Canyon all earned places in the latest ranking, giving the PacWest four teams in the West Region poll for the first time in the history of the league. All four teams moved up in the regional rankings this week, including Grand Canyon who made its debut.
The nine-school PacWest is comprised of seven NCAA II programs, as
well as two provisional schools in Academy of Art and Dominican
(CA) who are not eligible for rankings or NCAA post-season action
this year.
Dixie State (10-5/10-4 In-Region)
rocketed from 10th to sixth in the region this week,
while BYU-Hawaii (12-3/10-3) climbed one
spot from eighth to seventh. Chaminade
(10-5/10-4) jumped from 10th to eighth
this week, while Grand Canyon (9-6/7-5)
made its debut at
ninth.
The Division II men’s basketball committee in Indianapolis released the rankings on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The Top 10 teams are listed for each of the eight regions. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 2 leading up to the 64-team NCAA II selection show on March 6.
BYU-Hawaii senior guard Marques Whippy (Bua, Fiji/Woods Cross, UT)leads all NCAA Division II men’s basketball players in rebounding with an 11.9 per game average, while his 3.1 steals per contest ranks him fourth in the nation.
