BYU-Hawaii senior guard Marques Whippy named PacWest Men’s Basketball Player of Week
PHOENIX, AZ - BYU-Hawaii senior guard Marques
Whippy (Bua, Fiji/Woods Cross, UT) has been named the
Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
for the first time this season.
The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Feb. 28, for games contested Feb. 21-27.
Whippy produced a phenomenal all-around week in leading the Seasiders to a 1-1 mark. BYU-Hawaii beat Hawai‘i Hilo 84-71 and lost a 99-96 double-overtime contest at home to Dixie State.
Whippy averaged 16.5 points per game while shooting 56.0% from the floor (14 for 25). He also pulled down 19.0 rebounds per contest to lead the PacWest, gobbling up 32 of his 38 total boards on the defensive glass.
He also ranked fourth in assists per game (4.0), third in blocks per game (2.0), and tied for first in steals per contest (3.0) for the week in the PacWest.
PacWest Men’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll
Tsung-Hsein (Jet) Chang - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., 6-4, 190, G, Yilan,
Taiwan/Sing Rong)...averaged 29.0 points per game in
a 1-1 week for the Seasiders...led the PacWest in scoring for the
week...shot 52.6% (20 for 38) from the field...averaged 3.5
three-pointers made per game for the week - tops in the
conference.
Keith Davis - Academy of Art (Jr., 6-4, 205, F, Long Beach, CA/Long Beach)...scored 25 points and grabbed five rebounds in 73-65 vs. Dominican (CA) on Feb. 25 - the lone game of the week for the Urban Knights...shot 87.5% (7 for 8) from the line...went 2 for 4 (50.0%) from beyond the arc...also had two steals.
Mamadou Diarra - Chaminade (Jr., 7-0, 235, C, Bamako, Mali/Stoneridge Prep)...led the Silverswords to a 70-62 win over Hawai‘i Pacific on Feb. 25 - the lone game of the week for Chaminade...posted 19 points and nine rebounds while shooting 85.7% (6 for 7) from the floor...also shot 87.5% (7 for 8) from the foul line.
Tyler Fricke - Notre Dame de Namur (Jr., 6-6, 185, G, San Diego, CA/Mount Carmel)...averaged 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game despite a 0-2 week for the Argos...tied for seventh in scoring and ranked sixth in rebounding for the week in the PacWest...shot 85.7% (12 for 14) from the line.
Griffon Jones - Dixie State (Jr., 6-8, 220, F, Cheney,
WA/Cheney)...helped guide the Red Storm to a 2-0
week, including a thrilling double-overtime win vs. BYU-Hawaii on
Feb. 26...averaged 13.5 points while shooting 66.7% (12 for 18)
from the field...ranked seventh in field goal percentage and 11th
in scoring for the week in the PacWest.
Killian Larson - Dominican (CA) (So., 6-10, 260, C, Puyallup, WA/Puyallup)...led the Penguins to a 73-65 victory over Art U on Feb. 25...scored 22 points and collected 12 rebounds in the contest...shot 77.8% (7 for 9) from the field...ranked fourth in shooting for the week in the PacWest.
Gaby Nguondjo - Grand Canyon (Sr., 6-7, N/A, F/C, Douala, Cameroon/Little Rock Christian)...averaged 10.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for the Antelopes...ranked second in rejections and 10th in rebounding for the week in the conference...shot 58.3% (7 for 12) from the floor and 85.7% (6 for 7) from the line.
Justin Smith - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-6, 210, F, Los Angeles,
CA/Reseda)...averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds
per game in a 1-1 week for the Vulcans...tied for seventh in
scoring and tied for third in rebounding for the week in the
PacWest.
Tom Whitehead - Dixie State (Sr., 6-6, 185, F, St. George, UT/Dixie)...led the Red Storm to a 2-0 week by averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 assists per game...shot 54.5% (12 for 22) from the floor and 45.4% (5 for 11) from beyond the arc...tied for third in three-pointers made per game in the PacWest for the week...led the conference in foul shooting, going 7 for 7...ranked fifth in scoring and third in assist average for the week.
Zach Wilde - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 6-7, 220, F, Snohomish, WA/Snohomish)...averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Vulcans...shot 55.6% (10 for 18) from the field.
