Grand Canyon's Kyle Speed races to PacWest Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor
PHOENIX, AZ - Grand Canyon junior guard Kyle
Speed (Seattle, WA/Lake Washington) has been named
the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the
Week.
The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Dec. 20, for games contested Dec. 13-19.
Speed led the Antelopes to back-to-back wins over Simon Fraser and Montana State Billings on Dec. 17-18 by averaging 19.0 points and 4.5 assists per game.
He ranked seventh in handing out helpers and fifth in scoring in the conference for the week, while his 65.0% (13 for 20) shooting from the floor landed him eighth.
Speed also ranked third in steals per game for the week (3.5) and made 81.8% (9 for 11) of his free throw attempts. He had no turnovers in the twin victories.

Jonathan Burnett - Academy of Art (Sr., 6-7, 225, F, Rock Island,
IL/Rock Island)...scored 21 points and grabbed 10
rebounds in 86-73 win over Bethany (CA) on Dec. 18...led the
PacWest in field goal shooting for the week (81.8%)...made 9 of 11
field goal attempts.
Tsung-Hsein (Jet) Chang - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., 6-4, 190, G, Yilan, Taiwan/Sing Rong)...tallied 21 points in 71-55 win over Western Oregon on Dec. 17...shot 50.0% (4 for 8) from beyond the arc...tied for fifth in three-point shooting for the week in the PacWest.
Adam Chavis - Dominican (CA) (Sr., 6-5, 210, G, Oakland, CA/Castlemont)...averaged 17.0 points per game in 0-2 week for the Penguins.
Chris Curtis - Chaminade (Jr., 6-3, 185, G, Tustin, CA/Tustin)...scored 22 points in loss vs. Texas A&M International on Dec. 17...shot 75.0% (9 for 12) from the floor...tied for third in shooting for the week in the PacWest.
Keith Davis - Academy of Art (Jr., 6-4, 205, F, Long Beach, CA/Long Beach)...scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 86-73 win over Bethany (CA) on Dec. 18...went 4 for 4 from the line.
Jeff Ford - Notre Dame de Namur (Jr., 6-0, 190, G, Hayward,
CA/Hayward)...averaged 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds
per game for the Argos in a 0-2 week...ranked eighth in rebounding
and tied for 10th in scoring for the week in the conference.
Justin Smith - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-6, 210, F, Los Angeles, CA/Reseda)...averaged 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Vulcans...ranked eighth in scoring and second in rebounding during the week in the conference...shot 57.1% (20 for 35) from the field...also contributed 2.3 assists per contest.
Marques Whippy - BYU-Hawaii (Sr., 6-5, 215, G, Bua, Fiji/Woods Cross, UT)...dominated on the glass in leading Seasiders to 71-55 win over Western Oregon on Dec. 17...had 14 rebounds, including 13 on the defensive end...also had four steals, two assists and seven points...shot 60% (3 for 5) from the field.
Zach Wilde - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 6-7, 220, F, Snohomish,
WA/Snohomish)...averaged 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds
per game in a 2-1 week for the Vulcans...ranked fifth in rebounding
and tied for 14th in scoring for the week in the PacWest.
Nick Witherill - Grand Canyon (Jr., 6-2, N/A, G, Phoenix, AZ/Highland)...averaged 14.5 points in 2-0 week for the Antelopes...ranked ninth in scoring in the PacWest for the week...tied for second in three-pointers made per game (3.0) for the week...made 6 of 14 (42.9%) attempts from beyond the arc.
