KFVE will televise PacWest men’s basketball games on Jan. 3 & 10
HONOLULU, HI – KFVE
will televise a pair of key early-season Pacific West Conference
men’s basketball games between archrivals
Hawai‘i Hilo and
Hawai‘i Pacific on Jan.
3 and BYU-Hawaii and
Hawai‘i Pacific on Jan.
10.
“This is another great opportunity for the PacWest to showcase its outstanding student-athletes, athletic programs and institutions,” Bob Hogue, commissioner of the conference, stated.
The midweek match-ups will air at 7 p.m. HAST each night.
“KFVE is pleased to showcase two great intrastate PacWest men's basketball games,” John Fink, the station’s general manager, stated. “We hope the interest is there to allow us to look at doing more games, and perhaps other PacWest sports, on a going-forward basis.”
KFVE - and before 1993 its sister station KHNL - was home of the University of Hawai‘i sports for 28-years.
“During that time, more than 2,500 games were televised on
broadcast TV statewide, providing UH the most exposure of any
college team in America,” Fink, who will handle the
play-by-play for the two critical PacWest games, said.
KFVE is owned by MCG Capital that is based in Arlington, Va. The station is excited to be aligning itself with one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation.
“HPU, UHH and BYU-Hawaii (as well as Chaminade) have had great success in men's basketball over the years and we look forward to presenting these teams as they play one another in key, early-conference match-ups,” Fink said.
A long-time veteran of local television at KHNL and KFVE for more than a quarter century, Fink has handled play by play over the years for a myriad of sports, including men's and women's volleyball, women's soccer, women's basketball, and baseball at the collegiate level.
Hawaii News Now Sports Director Chris Tanaka will join Fink on the broadcasts as the color commentary for both contests. Hawaii News Now is the umbrella news operation providing local news and sports services for KFVE, KGMB (CBS Hawaii) and KHNL (NBC Hawaii).
