Chaminade junior guard Bennie Murray named PacWest Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
PHOENIX, AZ - Chaminade junior guard Bennie
Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood) has been named
the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the
Week.
The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Jan. 30, for games played Jan. 23-29.
Murray was phenomenal in the lone game of the week for the Silverswords - a 101-88 victory at Academy of Art on Jan. 23.
In the contest, Murray scored 34 points while tying the PacWest mark for the second-most three-pointers made in a single game.
He made 9 of 13 (69.2%) to fall one shy of the conference record of 10 set by Chaminade’s Joel Smith on Dec. 5, 2008, vs. Alaska Fairbanks. NDNU’s Chris Clock recorded nine on Feb. 6, 2008, at Grand Canyon.
Murray also produced nine rebounds, four assists, and a 4.0 assist/turnover ratio. He shot 60.0% (9 for 15) from the floor.
PacWest Men’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll
Jet Tsung-Hsein (Jet) Chang - BYU-Hawaii (Sr., 6-4, 190, G, Yilan,
Taiwan/Sing Rong)...scored 25 points while playing
all 40 minutes in 74-73 win at Dominican (CA) on Jan. 23 - his lone
game of the week...shot 55.5% (10 for 18) from the floor and 50.0%
(3 for 6) from beyond the arc...also had two steals and two
rebounds.
Matt Cousins - Chaminade (Sr., 6-8, 235, F/C, Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman)...helped lead the Silverswords to a 101-88 victory over Art U on Jan. 23 - the lone game of the week for Chaminade...scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds...shot 87.5% (7 for 8) from the line and 54.5% (6 for 11) from the field.
Tyler Fricke - Notre Dame de Namur (Sr., 6-6, 185, G, San Diego, CA/Mount Carmel)...scored 15 points, collected six rebounds and shot 71.4% (5 for 7) from the floor in lone game of the week - a 67-61 loss vs. Dominican (CA) on Jan. 28...shot 80.0% (4 for 5) from the line.
Bracken Funk - BYU-Hawaii (So., 6-7, 240, F, Highland, UT/Lone Peak)...averaged 10.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game during a 2-0 week for the Seasiders...shot 64.3% (9 for 14) from the field.
Jacob Noisat - Dominican (CA) (Jr., 6-8, 220, C, Santa Rosa, CA/Elsie Allen)...averaged 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Penguins during a 1-1 week...shot 68.8% (11 for 16) from the field...ranked eighth in shooting in the PacWest for the week.
Derek Owen - Dixie State (Jr., 6-8, 215, F/C, St. George,
UT/Dixie)...led Red Storm to an 88-73 win over
Hawai‘i Hilo on Jan. 24 - its lone game of the week...scored
11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out three assists and
shot 75.0% (3 for 4) from the field in the victory...was perfect
from the line (5 for 5).
Czar Robotham - Academy of Art (So., 5-11, 160, PG, Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman)...scored 27 points while shooting 64.3% (9 for 14) from the field in a tough 101-88 loss vs. Chaminade on Jan. 23...went 4 for 4 from the line...connected on 5 of 6 three-point attempts (83.3%)...handed out seven assists.
Kyle Speed - Grand Canyon (Sr., 6-1, 160, G, Seattle, WA/Lake Washington)...helped lead the Antelopes to a 1-1 week by averaging 19.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game...shot 54.5% (12 for 22) from the floor...made 11 of 12 (91.6%) attempts from the line.
Nick Witherill - Grand Canyon (Sr., 6-3, 180, G, Phoenix, AZ/Highland)...helped lead the Antelopes to a 1-1 week by averaging 17.0 points per game...shot 47.3% (9 for 19) from the field...deadly from beyond the arc after making 8 of 12 (66.7%)...also made 8 of 12 from the line (66.7%)...averaged 2.5 assists per contest.
Justus Von Wright - California Baptist (Sr., 6-3, 200, F, Arcadia, CA/Van Nuys)...led Lancers to a 59-57 win at Hawai‘i Hilo on Jan. 28 - their lone game of the week...scored 18 points, pulled down five rebounds, and shot 53.8% (7 for 13) from the field...also connected on 4 of 7 three-point attempts (57.1%).
