PacWest conference basketball action gets underway Dec. 1 with 10 games

The PacWest PHOENIX – The calendar may be flipping to Dec. 1 this weekend but there is no scheduling mistake for Academy of Art, Azusa Pacific, BYU-Hawaii, Dixie State, Dominican Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i Hilo and Holy Names – Pacific West Conference league games will get underway.

Typically the PacWest men's and women's basketball teams do not start conference action until after the holidays in early January; however, the addition of four schools that jumped conference membership to 14 teams necessitated beginning the PacWest season in December.

And the match-ups are intriguing.

Azusa Pacific will visit Point Loma, while Dominican travels across the Bay Bridge to face Holy Names at 2 p.m. PST on Saturday to simultaneously tip-off the 2012-13 PacWest women's basketball season. The men will follow at both locations.

The PLNU women enter the contest 2-2 while the Cougars are 1-4 as these two longtime rivals take to the hardwood as NCAA Division II foes instead of NAIA combatants.

In the men's game, Point Loma has posted a 2-3 non-conference record while Azusa Pacific is 2-2.

Both the Dominican and Holy Names women's teams are searching for their second victories of the season. The Penguins are 1-3, while the Hawks are 1-2 in their first season at the D-II level.

The HNU men's program is searching for its first NCAA Division II victory after a 0-4 start to the 2012-13 campaign. Dominican is 2-3 on the young season.

Hawai'i Pacific and BYU-Hawaii rekindle an annual battle between their women's and men's basketball programs on Saturday that required a change in time after the Seasider athletic program learned it would host the NCAA II Women's Volleyball West Regional.

The volleyball championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. meaning the Seasiders and Sea Warriors moved their basketball games to matinee show times.

Instead of being the final games of opening day, the HPU women will face BYU-Hawaii at noon on Saturday followed by the men's game at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The Sea Warrior women are off to a solid start at 5-2 that includes a current four-game winning streak, while BYU-Hawaii is 1-2 on the year.

The BYU-Hawaii men are 2-3 after a brutal schedule to start the season that featured three of the top teams in the West Region; however, the Seasiders have reeled off back-to-back wins. HPU is 0-3 on the season.

Hawai'i Hilo has the most unusual start to its season as the Vulcans journey to Saint George, Utah, to face the Red Storm of Dixie State for its opener. Often the start of the conference schedule sees local rivals battle before making the long treks across the Pacific.

The Vulcan men are 1-4 on the season and are looking to snap a four-game skid, while Dixie State is 3-2 on the season. The UHH women are 2-2 in non-conference action, while the Red Storm women are 2-3.

The second battle of the Bay Area will feature the opening day finale between Notre Dame de Namur and Academy of Art. The Argos will host the doubleheader in Belmont, Calif.

The NDNU women are 1-3 on the season and looking to end a two-game losing streak, while the Art U women are 5-1 in non-conference action and own the best overall winning percentage in the conference.

On the men's side, the Argonauts are 0-6 on the season and looking for their inaugural notch in the win column. Academy of Art is 1-4.
