5 of 6 teams set for PacWest Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament

De'Andre Haskins AZUSA, Calif. – Five teams and one opening-round game have been etched into the playoff bracket of the inaugural Pacific West Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.

The PacWest will hold its first conference tournament March 7-9 at Azusa Pacific University's Felix Event Center.

Five members of the six-team field have been admitted to the post-season tournament with BYU-Hawaii and Dominican locked into the fourth and fifth seeds – although which team is fourth and which is fifth is still to be determined.

The Penguins hold the tiebreaker following their 80-75 win on Jan. 14, but the neutral site game will be played on Thursday, March 7, at 8 p.m. to close out the first day of action.

Dixie State, Grand Canyon and Chaminade currently are tied for first place with 14-3 conference records. Dixie State wins any two-way tie with either Grand Canyon or Chaminade, while GCU owns the tiebreaker with the Silverswords.

For Chaminade to earn a first-round bye, the Silverswords need to win their final contest and hope for a loss by either Dixie State or Grand Canyon in their regular-season finales.

If all three teams win their final game, Dixie State's 3-0 mark against Chaminade and GCU would give the Red Storm the top seed in the tournament and the regular-season title.

Grand Canyon's early-season victory over the Silverswords would slide the Antelopes into the second seed with a first-round bye, while Chaminade would be the third seed and would face the sixth seed - either Academy of Art or Hawai'i Pacific.

Art U lands the sixth seed with a victory at Dominican on March 2. If the Urban Knights lose, then the door swings open for HPU to slide into the sixth seed with a victory vs. Chaminade also scheduled for March 2.

The possibility of a four-way tie for first-place exists if Chaminade, Dixie State and Grand Canyon all lose their final game and Fresno Pacific beats California Baptist. FPU is not eligible for the post-season tournament because the Sunbirds are transitioning to NCAA II status, but they are eligible for the regular-season crown.

In a four-way tie, Dixie State still wins the conference title because of a 4-1 record and .800 winning percentage among all four teams. Fresno Pacific would own a 3-2 mark, while GCU would be 2-3 and Chaminade 0-3.
