GCU, Dixie St. favorites to claim 2011 Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Golf Championship
ST. GEORGE, UT – Grand Canyon nipped host Dixie
State as the pre-tournament favorite for the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines
Pacific West Conference Championship in a vote by the head coaches
of the PacWest.
The three-round, two-day tournament commences on Monday, April 18, at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, UT. The event will feature 36 holes on the opening day followed by 18 holes on Tuesday, April 19.
Grand Canyon and Dixie State each received four first-place votes, but the Antelopes totaled 76 points while the Red Storm earned 74. Grand Canyon is the two-time defending PacWest Champion and has claimed the conference title in three of the last four years. Hawai‘i Hilo won the PacWest title in 2008.
The Vulcans collected a total of 57 points and were chosen to finish third, while BYU-Hawaii amassed 53 and is picked fourth. Hawai‘i Pacific, with 44 points and the final first-place vote, is ranked fifth.
The remaining predicted order of finish includes Academy of Art (6th - 33 points), Notre Dame de Namur (7th - 29), Dominican (8th - 21) and Chaminade (9th - 18).
Five players from each of the nine PacWest schools will play 54 holes on the Par 72, 6,875-yard course.
The Sunbrook Golf Club features three nine-hole courses – The Pointe, Woodbridge and Blackrock. Players will compete from the black tees on The Pointe and Woodbridge courses, with the exception of Hole 4 on Woodbridge which will be played from the gold tee.
The tournament features two holes over 500 yards – the second hole on The Pointe (521) and the first hole on Woodbridge (541).
In 2010, Grand Canyon captured the Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Golf Championship that was held at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Course in Ewa Beach, HI, on the par 72, 6,977-yard B & C courses. GCU’s Terence Daniels won the first PacWest Championship individual title.
The Antelopes finished with a three-round score of 876, 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Dixie State. BYU-Hawaii claimed third place with a 903, finishing just ahead of Hawai‘i Hilo’s fourth-place score of 908.
Notre Dame de Namur took fifth (914), Academy of Art finished sixth (917) and Hawai‘i Pacific wound up seventh (933). Chaminade rounded out the team scoring with an eighth-place score of 1010.
