Hawai‘i Hilo, Dixie St, Grand Canyon head for NCAA II Central/West Regional in Albuquerque
INDIANAPOLIS – Dixie
State, Grand Canyon and
Hawai‘i Hilo will make the journey
to Albuquerque, N.M., for the NCAA Division II Central/West Men’s Golf
Regional and a berth in the national championship
tournament.
Joining the trio of Pacific West Conference squads will be Notre Dame de Namur’s Ryan Sheffer and Troy Davis who have been selected to compete as individuals in the regional.
The three-day, 54-hole event will be held May 2-4 at The Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico. Golfers are expected to play from the black tees on the Par 72, 7562-yard course. Tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. MDT and Noon MDT each day with a shotgun start practice round slated for Sunday, May 1, at 1:30 p.m. MDT.
The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship field consists of 80 teams (10 from each region) and 32 individual student-athletes (4 per region) from teams not selected to compete in the national tournament.
The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a
team from each regional will advance to the finals May 16-20 at the
Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Florence, Ala. The
finals will be hosted by the University of North Alabama.
In addition to the Central/West Region Championship, there are three other locations around the nation hosting regionals. These include:
- Atlantic and East - Hershey Links Golf Club, Hershey, Pa. (hosted by Millersville University of Pennsylvania).
- South and Southeast - Victoria Hills Golf Club, DeLand, Fla. (hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and the Central Florida Sports Commission).
- Midwest and South Central - Cherry Blossom Golf Club, Georgetown, Ky. (hosted by Northern Kentucky University).
Hawai‘i Hilo nipped Grand Canyon and Dixie State to capture the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Championship in St. George, UT, on April 18-19. The victory gave the Vulcans the automatic berth in the NCAA II Tournmanet and landed them as the 10th seed in the 10-team field.
Hawai‘i Hilo’s Blake Snyder fired a three-under-par 213 to win the individual title.
During the PacWest Championship, the Vulcans posted a three-round
team score of 880 to win their second title in four years after
capturing the league crown in 2008. Grand Canyon finished second
with an 881, while Dixie State wound up third with an 882.
The 54-hole PacWest Championship was contested at the Sunbrook Golf Club on its Par 72, 6875-yard course.
Grand Canyon enters the regional as the sixth seed, while Dixie State competes as the seventh seed.
Cal State San Bernardino (8th), Cal State Stanislaus (5th), Sonoma State (4th), Chico State (3rd) and Cal State Monterey Bay (1st) will represent the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Western Washington (2nd) and Saint Martin’s (9th) are members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
