Defending Champion Grand Canyon takes early lead

GCU grabs lead at 2008 Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Golf Championship

TURTLE BAY, HI - Defending champion Grand Canyon University has jumped out to a slim three-stroke lead following the opening round of the 2008 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Championship.

The three-round event began on Monday and will conclude on Wednesday at the Turtle Bay Resort. The 7,072-yard course is a par 72.

Grand Canyon leads the field with a 304, three strokes ahead of Notre Dame de Namur (307) and five in front of Hawai‘i Hilo (309). Dixie State (323), BYU-Hawaii (330), Hawai‘i Pacific (332) and Chaminade (376) round out the league's seven teams.

A three-way logjam is stuck at the top of the leader board as Logan Goulding (UHH), Mike Prescott (NDNU) and Bentley Nakasawa (GCU) are deadlocked at 74.

Ryan Sheffer of NDNU is fourth with a 75, while Donald Zaruba (GCU) and Zady Ari (UHH) are tied for sixth with a 76.

There is also a three-way tie for seventh place as Adam Istvan (HPU), Brett Beaty (GCU) and Ryan Sperry (GCU) each have opened up the tournament with a round of 77.

The Top 10 is capped by three players at 78 - Jesus Valdivia (UHH), Terence Daniels (GCU) and Derek Hall (BYUH).
