Terence Daniels GCU’s Daniels, Chandonnet earn Golfer, Coach of the Year awards

PHOENIX, AZ – For the second consecutive season, Grand Canyon senior Terence Daniels (Smith's, Bermuda/Desert Mountain, AZ) has been named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year.

He joins GCU Head Coach Marc Chandonnet who has been selected the PacWest Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after guiding the Antelopes to their third conference crown in four years.

The PacWest men’s golf awards were announced on Saturday, July 31, 2010, and feature a Newcomer and a Freshman of the Year honor in addition to the Golfer and Coach of the Year awards.

BYU-Hawaii freshman Inoka Kahawaii (Laie, HI/Kahuku) was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year after placing second in the conference tournament in April. He stood in fifth place after two rounds of the league championship before rocketing up five slots during the third round by firing a one-under-par 71.

Kahawaii finished the three-round championship with a 218 score, earning All-PacWest First Team honors for his outstanding rookie performance. The PacWest rewards golfers with First Team accolades for placing 1-7 at the championship, while those finishing 8-14 are considered All-PacWest Second Team.

The All-Conference Team was released in April immediately following the tournament.

Stuart Favretto Academy of Art sophomore Stuart Favretto (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic) was named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year after earning All-PacWest First Team honors at the conference championship. He tied for seventh place with a three-round score of 224 to collect the accolades.

During the 2010 campaign, Favretto shot a season low three-under-par 69 during the second round of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational. He posted five Top 25 finishes this season and wound up in the Top 10 in two tournaments, including the Dominican Invitational where he finished eighth.

But it was Daniels who reigned supreme over the conference again in 2010. The native of Smith’s, Bermuda, posted a 73.30 average this season with a low round of 68 during the GCU Thunderbird Invitational. He turned in eight rounds under par and finished the campaign ranked 11th in the NCAA II West Region and 46th in Division II.

Daniels claimed his first PacWest Individual Championship by firing a final round of 70, leading his Antelope squad to the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Men’s Golf Championship in Ewa Beach, HI.

Daniels completed the 54-hole, two-day event with a score of 212, finishing the three rounds four strokes under par. He was the lone golfer in the tournament to break par.

The Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Golf Championship was held at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Course in Ewa Beach, HI, on the par 72, 6,977-yard B & C courses.

Grand Canyon captured its third PacWest title in the last four years after claiming conference championships in 2007 and 2009. The Antelopes finished with a three-round score of 876, 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Dixie State. BYU-Hawaii claimed third with a 903, finishing just ahead of Hawai‘i Hilo’s 908.

Daniels won the first individual conference title of his career after finishing tied for fifth in 2009 and losing a sudden-death playoff vs. Zady Ari of Hawai‘i Hilo in 2008 on an 80-yard eagle. He also earned All-PacWest First Team honors for the third straight season for finishing in the top seven of the league championship tournament.

Marc Chandonnet Chandonnet completed his second season as Grand Canyon University's director of golf and men's head coach in 2010 by winning his second straight Coach of the Year honor. He guided GCU to its fifth straight NCAA II appearance where the Antelopes tied for seventh place in the Central/West Super Regional.

Prior to taking over the coaching reins, Chandonnet served as the associate head coach of the men's team for three years. He also has served as the women's head coach since 2004.

Within a three-year span while coaching the women’s team, Chandonnet guided the program from 45th in the country to 18th. In 2008, Chandonnet coached the first GCU women's player to qualify for the NCAA II Championships in Jessica McKay. She finished 26th at the national tournament.

Chandonnet was a four-year letterwinner for the GCU's men's golf team from 1999-2003. He was a part of the 2000 national runner-up squad.

A native of Boston, MA, Chandonnet graduated from Greater Lowell High School in 1994. Before arriving at GCU in the fall of 1999, he qualified for the 1998 United States Amateur at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY.

In August 2008, Chandonnet qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships after finishing tied for second at the Arizona Sectional in Flagstaff, AZ. He shot a 1-under-par 70 at the Pine Canyon Club.

Prior to the U.S. Amateur, Chandonnet attended the Golf Academy of the South from 1994-96, winning both the Academy's Match Play and Tournament of Champions events. He also has competed in over five Massachusetts state amateurs and Massachusetts state open championships.

Chandonnet earned a bachelor of arts with an emphasis in graphic design from Grand Canyon in 2003.
