Dixie State, GCU tied after two rounds of Hawaiian Airlines
PacWest Men's Golf Championship
EWA BEACH, HI – After 36 holes of the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Men’s Golf Championship, Dixie State and Grand Canyon are locked atop the leader board with team scores of 587.
And with just 18 holes to play, Grand Canyon senior Terence Daniels (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Hawai‘i Hilo senior Ryan Felix (Tucson, AZ) hold a two-stroke lead over a pair of Dixie State golfers.
The two-day, three-round Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Golf Championship kicked off on Monday, April 19, at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Course in Ewa Beach, HI. The event is being held on the par 72, 6,801-yard B & C courses at the facility.
All nine PacWest programs are competing in the conference tournament with each school permitted to start five players but using only the four individual scores for team totals.
The Antelopes, who captured PacWest titles in 2007 and 2009, rolled out an opening-round 295 to end the morning in third place - three strokes behind the Red Storm of Dixie State. BYU-Hawaii actually stood second with a 294 after the morning session.
But during the afternoon action, Dixie State’s 295 coupled with Grand Canyon’s 292 forged a tie between the two squads heading into Tuesday’s final rounds.
Hawai‘i Hilo – the 2008 champion – unleashed a 293 in the second round to overcome a 298 first-round score and jump into third place. The Vulcans are just four strokes behind the Antelopes and Red Storm.
BYU-Hawaii slipped to fourth with a 598 after a solid 294 opening round but a disappointing 304 during the afternoon. Notre Dame de Namur is fifth with a 611.
Both Daniels and Felix are scorching the course. Daniels fired a par 72 first round before recording a two-under-par 70 in the second round to pull even with Felix and his pair of 71s.
Lurking on the proverbial horizon are a pair of Dixie State
players in sophomore Kyle Chappell and
senior Taylor Reardon (Las Vegas,
NV/Centennial) who are tied for third at 144.
Chappell struggled with a three-over-par 75 in the morning round,
but
he shredded the afternoon 18 with a round of 69. Reardon,
meanwhile, posted a 71 in the morning and a 73 in the afternoon.
BYU-Hawaii sophomore Doug Bischoff (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Tesoro) stands fifth and freshman Inoka Kahawaii (Laie, HI/Kahuku) is seventh after the two players recorded scores of 145 and 147, respectively.
Hawai‘i Hilo senior Logan Goulding (Tracy, CA/Merril West) stands sixth after posting identical rounds of 73 for a total of 146. Last season Goulding finished tied for second after falling in a three-way playoff round.
Dixie State junior Conner Jones (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) is tied for seventh with a 147 total. He produced a one-under-par 71 on the first 18 before recording a 76 on the second round of 18.
The PacWest Championship will produce a medallist in the first-place finisher and 14 All-PacWest golfers. The top seven finishers at the PacWest Men’s Golf Championship will be named All-PacWest First Team, while golfers finishing 8-14 will be named All-PacWest Second Team.
The PacWest Player, Newcomer, Freshman and Coach of the Year will be selected by a vote of the head coaches in the conference following the completion of the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament.
