California Baptist shares men's soccer title, claims 4th PacWest Championship this fall
RIVERSIDE, CA – California Baptist senior forward
Osvaldo Bastida (Anaheim, CA/Katella)
snapped a 1-1 tie early in the second half by drilling home what
would prove to be the championship-tying goal in a 3-1
victory over Dixie State on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Riverside, CA.
The victory propelled the Lancers to a share of the 2011 Pacific West Conference Men’s Soccer Championship – their fourth conference title since beginning competition in the PacWest this fall.
When the first round of Commissioner Cup Standings is released after the volleyball regular season wraps up on Nov. 12, California Baptist will likely sit atop of the standings.
The Lancers, who captured both the men’s and women’s cross country championships along with the women’s soccer title, share the PacWest Men’s Soccer Championship with Hawai‘i Pacific after both squads finished the conference schedule with 30 points on identical 10-2 league marks. HPU is 14-4 overall while the Lancers are 13-5.
Bastida provided the difference for CBU at 53:41 after settling a
pass from sophomore midfielder Alex Anderson (Palmdale,
CA/Palmdale) and ripping a shot into the far corner
of the net.
Sophomore middie Marc Hope (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Baptist Academy) provided some breathing room at 82:50 when he scored on a feed from freshman forward Michael Salazar (Moreno Valley, CA/Canyon Springs), turning a slim 2-1 lead into a 3-1 CBU advantage.
Hope set up senior midfielder Ruben Sanchez (Corona, CA/Corona) with the game’s first goal at 14:57, but Dixie State tied the contest 1-1 at 26:00 when junior forward Jordan Roylance (Smithfield, UT/Sky View) tallied his seventh goal of the season.
