Robinson's overtime goal gives Grand Canyon 5th PacWest men’s soccer title since 2006
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Saeed Robinson pumped in the
game-winning goal 7:09 into the second overtime period to give
Grand Canyon a 1-0 victory over California Baptist and its
fifth Pacific West Conference men’s soccer title since the
league reorganized in 2006.
Robinson received a feed from Emmanuel Bonilla-Segura in front of the net at 107:09 and redirected the pass into the back of the Lancers’ cage for the conference-deciding victory.
Joshua Zehring stopped all five shots on goal he faced to earn the shutout victory. Lancer netminder Joey Pacheco repelled the first 10 shots on goal he faced before GCU knocked home the game-winner.
California Baptist entered the contest needing a victory to forge a tie atop the standings with the Antelopes that would have given the Lancers the PacWest Championship by virtue of a 1-0-1 record vs. Grand Canyon.
The Antelopes needed a win or a tie to claim their third title in four years. Grand Canyon claimed the PacWest Championship outright in 2007, 2009 and 2010, while in 2006 the Antelopes were co-champions with Notre Dame de Namur.
Grand Canyon will await the NCAA Division II selections on Monday to find out the 2012 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship field.
