Grand Canyon holds 5-point lead in chase for PacWest men’s soccer crown; NDNU, CBU close

Saeed Robinson PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Grand Canyon University Antelopes ran their winning streak to eight straight this past week as they widened their lead in the PacWest men's soccer race, but a huge showdown in Southern California looms on the horizon.

The Antelopes are the first team in the conference to garner 10 league victories and have 30 points overall. Notre Dame de Namur is second with 25, followed by California Baptist and Fresno Pacific with 24 each.

GCU (10-1) earned back-to-back wins over Dixie State this past week, one in St. George and the other in Phoenix.

On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the 'Lopes edged the Red Storm 3-2 in overtime on Saeed Robinson's third goal of the match. Robinson also had a goal and an assist in GCU's 3-0 victory on Saturday night. The 'Lopes have two huge matches in Southern California this week.

NDNU ran its record to 8-2-1 with a split of games against Southern California rivals California Baptist and Azusa Pacific.

Michael Salazar On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Argonauts lost a 1-0 overtime thriller to the visiting Lancers. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Argos edged the visiting Cougars by that same 1-0 count as Jonathan Gonzalez kicked the game-winning goal.

California Baptist (8-2) won two big contests in Northern California. Michael Salazar tallied the game-winner in the 1-0 overtime victory over NDNU. He also scored a goal in the Lancers' 3-0 win at Dominican on Saturday, Oct. 20, in San Rafael.

Fresno Pacific (8-3) ran its winning streak to six straight this week with victories over Azusa Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 18, by the score of 3-1, and in a 2-0 win over Academy of Art on Oct. 20. The Sunbirds' Alvaro Nogales scored twice in the Thursday contest to lead the way.

Azusa Pacific fell to 7-4 with the two losses on the road, while Hawai'i Pacific (6-3-2) stayed close behind in the standings with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Chaminade and a 2-1 victory over BYU-Hawaii. However, the Sea Warriors took a tough hit on Monday, Oct. 22, after getting beat 4-1 vs. Hawai'i Hilo.
