BYU-Hawaii wins 2010 Hawaii Airlines PacWest title; Art U’s Maru repeats
TURTLE BAY, HI – BYU-Hawaii claimed six of the first
10 individual spots in running to the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines
Pacific West Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship.
The Seasiders captured the PacWest title on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu by recording a league-best 33 points. Runner-up Academy of Art finished second with 65 points, followed by Hawai‘i Pacific with 75.
Academy of Art junior Amos Maru (Nandi Hills, Kenya), the 2009 PacWest Individual Champion, repeated this year after posting a time of 24:33.1 on the 8K course.
Maru’s teammate, junior Daveson Marindich (Eldoret, Kenya), finished as the runner-up for the second straight year after recording a time of 24:37.8.
Both runners were named All-PacWest First Team for finishing in the Top 7 of the conference championship race.
Grand Canyon junior Kip Mutai (Bomet,
Kenya/Kabusare) wound up third overall and first
among Antelope entries with a time of 24:51.7. He also earned First
Team All-PacWest accolades.
But despite not placing any runners in the top three, BYU-Hawaii captured the PacWest title by jostling six Seasiders from fourth through 10th place.
Senior Thomas Rivers Puzey (Hermiston, OR/Hermiston) started the BYU-Hawaii parade across the finish line with a fourth-place mark of 25:54.4. Senior Matthew Gulden (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) grabbed fifth in 25:58.0, while Matthew Roberts was seventh in 26:17.5. All three BYU-Hawaii runners earned First Team honors.
Junior Luke Graesser (Spokane, WA/North Central) and senior Brandon Krout (Vancouver, WA/Prairie) rounded out the team scoring for the Seasiders by taking eighth (26:21.3) and ninth (26:23.0), respectively. Freshman Vincente Herrera (Manteca, CA/Manteca) did not count in the team scoring but did finish 10th with his mark of 26:24.3. All three runners were named All-PacWest Second Team for finishing 8-14.
BYU-Hawaii junior Justin Royer (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) also finished with an All-PacWest Second Team honor by posting a time of 26:31.5 that landed him 12th overall.
Hawai‘i Pacific freshman Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark/Tietgen Business College) completed the All-PacWest First Team with a sixth-place time of 26:08.6. He was the lone Sea Warrior to finish in the Top 14.
Chaminade junior Garrett Prinslow (Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) took 11th with a mark of 26:24.9, while Hawai‘i Hilo junior Keoni Ucker (Pahoa, HI/Christian Liberty Academy) was 13th in 26:43.7.
Grand Canyon sophomore Julio Zuniga (Phoenix, AZ/Trevor G. Browne) crept into the final awards slot by finishing in 14th place with his mark of 26:48.7.
Prinslow, Ucker and Zuniga each earned Second Team All-PacWest honors.
