GCU's Sharles Simon claims All-Region honors, advances to NCAA II Men’s XC Championship
KAHUKU, Hawai'i – Grand Canyon senior Sharles Simon (Phoenix, AZ/Central) finished sixth and BYU-Hawaii senior Spencer Deavila (La Mirade, CA/Highland) placed 23rd to claim All-Region honors at the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's West Region Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Kahuku, Hawai'i.
Simon also advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship race in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 17 for being the top individual runner not representing a team that is advancing to nationals.
Hawai'i Pacific University hosted the 10K championship race at the Kahuku Golf Course a week after hosting the Pacific West Conference Championship.
The Top 25 runners earned All-Region accolades, while the Top 5 teams along with the Top 3 individuals not on one of those five squads advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship race.
Chico State, Alaska Anchorage, Western Washington, San Francisco State and Humboldt State finished 1-5, respectively, and will head to Missouri.
Simon posted a time of 32:22.63 to finish sixth out of 134 competitors.
Deavila recorded a time of 33:13.02 to earn All-Region accolades and led BYU-Hawaii to a seventh-place team finish – tops among PacWest schools.
Host Hawai'i Pacific placed 14th, while Dixie State finished 17th in the region.
