HPU softball honored at Hawai‘i state capital

HONOLULU, HI - In the Ceremonial Room at the Hawai‘i State Capital, the Hawai‘i Pacific University softball team was honored by Lt. Governor Duke Aiona, who proclaimed June 17, 2010, as Hawai’i Pacific University Lady Sea Warriors Softball Day.

The Lady Sea Warriors received the proclamation award around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning in front of family, friends and reporters.

“As a sports enthusiast myself, I can appreciate the hard work all of you put toward winning the national championship,” Aiona said. “I also want to congratulate the team’s parents and family members, as well as the HPU administration for this achievement.”

In addition to Aiona’s comments, HPU Athletics Director Darren Vorderbruegge and Head Coach Bryan Nakasone addressed the audience.

The ceremony concluded with the Aiona presenting each player with the Proclamation Award.

HPU returned to the islands on June 1 after winning its first NCAA Division II Softball National Championship.

Its victory over Valdosta State in the championship game capped a 4-0 mark in the tournament. The Sea Warriors concluded the season ranked first in the nation and a record-setting 50-8 overall record - the best in program history.
