PHOENIX, AZ – Hawai‘i Pacific senior Casey Sugihara (Mililani, HI/Mililani) and Dixie State junior hurler Brittnie Whipple (Moab, UT/Grand) have been named the Pacific West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The awards were announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, April 26, for games contested April 19-25.
Sugihara led the Sea Wariors to the PacWest title and the Commissioner’s Cup Championship by hitting .769 in a four-game sweep of Chaminade.
She went 10 for 13 with seven runs scored, one double, two runs batted in and a pair of stolen bases.
She also produced an .846 slugging percentage and a .786 on-base rate.
Whipple posted a 4-0 record in four starts after tossing three complete-game victories with a 0.28 earned run average.
In 25 innings she allowed just eight hits, one earned run, three walks and one extra-base hit.
She also posted 33 strikeouts and a .094 batting average while unleashing a no-hitter, a one-hitter and a two-hitter during the week.

Nicole Alconcel - Hawai‘i Hilo (So., 5-6, IN, R/R, Wailuku, HI/H.P. Baldwin)...batted .667 in four starts during 4-0 week for UHH...was 6 for 9 with three runs, two doubles and two RBI...2 for 2 in stolen base attempts...posted an .889 slugging mark and a .636 on-base rate...walked once and hit a sacrifice fly.
Teddy Barry - Grand Canyon (Jr., 5-8, OF, L/R, Phoenix,
AZ/Gateway)...led the Antelopes to a 4-0 week by
hitting .636 in four starts...went 7 for 11 with seven runs scored,
a home run, eight RBI and four walks...converted 4 of 5 stolen base
attempts...had a .909 slugging rate and a .733 on-base mark.
Kelli Bridges - Grand Canyon (Sr., 5-3, SS, R/R, Coeur d’Alene, ID/Lake City)...led Grand Canyon to a 4-0 weekend sweep...hit .643 by going 9 for 14 with three runs scored, two doubles and eight RBI...had a .786 slugging rate and a .667 on-base percentage...stole a base and walked once.
Johnna Brown - Dixie State (Fr., 6-0, SS, R/R, Las Vegas, NV/ Centennial)...led the Red Storm to a 7-1 mark during the week...batted .444 by going 12 for 27 at the plate...drove in 17 runs, scored nine, and ripped three doubles...also tripled twice and homered once...had an .815 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base mark...stole a base, dropped a sacrifice bunt and walked once.
Ivy Campas - Grand Canyon (So., 5-2, P, R/R, Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside)...registered a 2-0 week with a save and a 0.00 ERA...helped Antelopes to a 4-0 week...allowed no earned runs and seven base hits while striking out seven...permitted a .171 batting average.
Sierrah Garcia - Academy of Art (So., 5-7, P, L/R, Los Banos,
CA/Los Banos)...registered a 3-1 mark with a 1.84
earned run average in six appearances and two starts...threw one
complete-game, shutout win...allowed five earned runs in 19.0
innings of action...struck out 13...permitted a .225 batting
average...batted .353 in six starts...went 6 for 17 with three runs
scored, two doubles, two RBI and a .471 slugging
percentage...dropped two sacrifice bunts and reached base twice
after being hit.
Maile Kim - Hawai‘i Pacific (So., 5-3, U, R/R, Salinas, CA/Notre Dame)...batted .444 in four-game sweep of Chaminade...was 4 for 9 with three homers, five runs and 10 RBI...posted a 1.444 slugging rate and a .500 on-base mark...hit sacrifice fly, dropped a sacrifice bunt and walked twice.
Sherise Musquiz - Hawai‘i Pacific (Sr., 6-0, P, R/R, Pico Rivera, CA/El Rancho)...posted a 2-0 record with one save in three appearances and two starts...set the HPU single-season (24) and career victory marks in the process...fnished the week with a 2-0 record and a 1.70 ERA...struck out four and allowed no walks in 12.1 innings...allowed three runs on nine hits with a .196 batting average...helped guide HPU to PacWest title.
Ashley Valine - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., 5-9, P, R/R, Shell
Beach, CA/San Luis Obispo)...registered a 2-0 mark in
series sweep of Chaminade...helped guide HPU to PacWest title...saw
action in two games with one start...allowed no earned runs in 12.2
innings of work...yielded one walk while striking out three
batters...opponents hit .224.
Amber Waracka - Hawai‘i Hilo (So., 5-9, P, R/R, Kahuluu, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama)...earned a pair of complete-game, one-hit shutout victories vs. BYU-Hawaii...posted a 2-0 record...allowed two hits and no runs while striking out 16 batters in 14.0 innings of action...permitted one extra-base hit and a .045 batting average.
