7 PacWest players earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA D-II All-Region

Kelsey Mendenhall PHOENIX, AZ – Seven Pacific West Conference players have been selected to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-West Region Softball Team.

Grand Canyon senior OF Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway), Dixie State junior 3B Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele, UT/Tooele), and Hawai‘i Hilo junior OF Bryanna Hardy (Simi Valley, CA/Grace Brethren) and senior pitcher Christina Pedroza (La Mirada, CA/La Mirada) have been named to the First Team.

The head coaches of Division II softball teams around the country selected the teams. First Team selections are placed on the national ballot and will vie for All-America honors. The team was unveiled on Thursday, May 19.

Hawai‘i Hilo junior SS Nicole Alconcel (Kahului, HI/HP Baldwin), Dixie State sophomore 1B Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley), and Academy of Art rookie OF Elyse Cordova (Tulare, CA/Tulare Union) earned a place on the Second Team.

Anna Cue Pedroza batted .306 in 40 games and 36 starts for the Vulcans, going 34 for 111 with 13 runs, eight doubles, three homers and 23 RBI – all with a .459 slugging rate. She also posted an 11-7 mark on the mound with nine complete games and a 2.40 earned run average. She struck out 67 in 110.2 innings of action.

Hardy hit .369 in 42 starts with 45 base hits for UHH, adding 20 runs, 13 RBI, 23 walks and a .480 on-base mark.

Alconcel helped push the UHH offense by batting .359 in 36 starts. She went 37 for 103 with 25 runs, six doubles, two homers and 19 RBI. She also contributed a .476 slugging rate and a .469 on-base mark.

Barry batted .388 for GCU in 47 starts. She had 57 base hits, 39 runs, 10 doubles and eight home runs. She posted a .633 slugging percentage and a .471 on-base mark, while she also stole 22 bases.

Nicole Alconcel Mendenhall hit .354 in 47 starts this year for the Red Storm. She totaled 45 base hits, 42 runs scored, 41 RBI, 11 homers and 11 doubles to go along with a .701 slugging mark and a .497 on-base rate. She also walked 33 times.

Cue, the PacWest Player of the Year and an All-PacWest First Team selection, led the PacWest in hitting (.437), runs batted in (53), and in slugging (.817). She ranked ninth in on-base percentage (.462), tied for 10th in base hits (55), and finished second in home runs (12) and total bases (103). She tied for eighth in doubles (10).

Cordova hit .393 this season for the Urban Knights. She registered 66 base hits, 40 runs scored, six doubles, 22 RBI, 18 stolen bases, a .421 on-base mark and a .488 slugging rate – all in 49 starts.
