Dixie State's Anna Cue repeats, HPU's Ashley Valine joins chase for weekly softball awards
PHOENIX, AZ - Dixie State's Anna Cue and
Hawai‘i Pacific's Ashley Valine have been
named the Pacific West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week,
respectively.
The PacWest announced the awards on April 25 from its office in Phoenix, AZ, for games contested April 18-24.
(April 25,
2011) - Player of the Week (April
18-24)...Anna Cue - Dixie State (So.,
5-5, 1B/OF, L/L, Murrieta Valley,
CA/Murrieta)...earned the honor for the second
straight week after leading the Red Storm to another 5-1 week...hit
.583 in six starts - all on the road in Hawai‘i...went 14 for
24 with eight runs, a double, five home runs and 16 RBI...posted a
1.250 slugging percentage and a .583 on-base rate.
(April 25, 2011) - Pitcher of the Week (April 18-24)...Ashley Valine - Hawai‘i Pacific (Sr., 5-8, P, R/R, San Luis Obispo, CA/San Luis Obispo)...recorded a 3-0 week for the Sea Warriors...posted a 2.14 ERA in three appearances and two starts...tossed one complete game...allowed five earned runs in 16.1 innings of action...struck out five and walked just two.
PacWest Softball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll
Crystal Albert - Dominican (CA) (Fr., 5-5, OF, L/L, San Clemente,
CA/San Clemente)...had a phenomenal doubleheader vs.
Academy of Art on April 23 despite Penguins losing both games...was
perfect at the plate, going 9 for 9 with four runs scored,
one RBI and a stolen base...recorded a 1.000 batting average,
on-base percentage and slugging rate for the day.
Robin Araujo - Notre Dame de Namur (Jr., 5-7, IF R/R, Campbell, CA/Westmont)...batted .545 in four starts during a 1-3 week for the Argos...went 6 for 11 with four runs scored, a double, two homers and two RBI...walked four...had a .667 on-base mark and a 1.182 slugging rate.
Katie Brooks - Academy of Art (Fr., 5-10, P, R/R, Grover Beach, CA/Arroyo Grande)...posted 3-0 week on the mound for the Urban Knights...had 2.91 earned run average in four appearances...earned two starts and posted one complete game...walked just three in 21.2 innings of work...struck out eight.
Lauren Folta - Dixie State (Jr., 5-5, P, R/R, Erda, UT/Tooele)...had a 3-1 week with three complete games in four appearances...struck out eight while allowing six earned runs in 24 innings...posted a 1.75 earned run average.
Jaelle Judkins - Dixie State (So., 5-7, OF, L/L, St. George,
UT/Dixie)...helped lead Red Storm to 5-1 week by
hitting .500 in six starts...went 11 for 22 with nine runs, double
and two walks...dropped two sacrifice bunts and went 3 for 3 in
stolen base attempts...had a .542 on-base average and a .545
slugging rate.
Maile Kim - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., 5-4, U, R/R, Salinas, CA/Notre Dame)...led Sea Warriors to a 5-1 week by hitting .500 in six starts...went 11 for 22 with four runs, a homer and seven RBI...had a .636 slugging mark and a .500 on-base percentage...dropped a sacrifice bunt.
Kayleigh Klingberg - Dominican (CA) (Fr., 5-7, IF/OF, L/R, Castle Rock, WA/Castle Rock)...produced a terrific doubleheader vs. Academy of Art on April 23 despite Penguins losing both games...hit .556 after going 5 for 9 with a double, two triples and eight RBI...had a 1.111 slugging mark and a .556 on-base average.
Kelsey Mendenhall - Dixie State (So., 5-4, 3B, R/R, Tooele, UT/Tooele)...led Red Storm to 5-1 week by hitting .571 in six starts...went 8 for 14 with five runs, two doubles, one homer, seven RBI and five walks...had .929 slugging rate and a .650 on-base mark...hit a sacrifice fly.
Caira Pires - Hawai‘i Pacific (So., 5-4, IF, R/R, Kailua, HI/Kalaheo)...helped the Sea Warriors to a 5-1 week by hitting .429 in six starts...went 9 for 21 with three runs, two doubles, a triple and a home run...drove in six runs...posted a .762 slugging rate and a .455 on-base mark...walked once.
Nicole Smith - Academy of Art (So., 5-6, IF, R/R, Moscow, ID/Moscow Senior)...led Urban Knights to a 4-0 week by hitting .714...went 5 for 7 with two runs scored and three RBI...had three walks and stole a base...posted a .714 slugging rate and an .818 on-base mark...also reached base after getting plunked.
