Hawai‘i Hilo's Rachael Thornquist picked as first PacWest Volleyball Player of Week for 2010

Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake
Central) has been chosen the first Pacific West
Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for 2010.
The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Tuesday, Sept. 7, for matches contested from Sept. 2-5.
Thornquist led the Vulcans to a 3-1 week by topping the conference in hitting with a thundering .405 average. She had 43 kills in 84 attempts while committing just nine errors.
Thornquist also ranked fourth in the PacWest in kills per game (3.31) for the week, while her 43 kills landed her sixth on the league chart. She amassed 49.5 points by amassing 43 kills, seven block assists and three aces, averaging 3.81 points per game to stand fourth for the week in the league.

Julia Aika Becker - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., 5-10,
OH, Kodiak, AK/Kodiak)...ranked fifth in points per
game (3.54) and tied for seventh in aces per game (0.50) for the
week in the PacWest...totaled 49.5 points on 39 kills, seven aces
and seven blocks assists...ranked 10th in hitting for the week
(.240) and ninth in kills per game (2.79) in the
conference...Seasiders started the year 1-3.
Kawena Cubi-Otineru - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 5-10, OPP/OH, Haleiwa, HI/St. Francis)...helped the Vulcans to a 3-1 start by averaging 3.50 points per game - tied for sixth best in the PacWest for the week...totaled 49 points on 46 kills, two aces and a pair of block assists...tied for eighth during the week in hitting (.250)...ranked fifth in kills per game (3.29).
Madisyn Fitzgerald - Dixie State (So., 6-0, M, Mesa, AZ/Mountain View)...led the Red Storm to a 3-1 start on the season by hitting .342 (2nd best in the league for the week)...had 38 kills, nine aces, one block solo and 13 block assists...averaged 3.21 points per game (9th in the PacWest for the week).
Hillary-Lucy Hurley - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 6-2, MB, Anderson, CA/Enterprise)...ranked third for the week in kills per game (3.50) and third in total kills (49)...also stands third in points per game for the week with a 4.11 average...chipped in five aces, five block assists and one block solo to boost her point total to 57.5.
Pihana Kea - Hawai‘i Pacific (So., 5-7, S, Honolulu, HI/Punahou)...ranked third in assists per game (9.35) but first in total assists (159) for the week in the PacWest.
Kyra Pelayo - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., 5-3, DS, San Jose, CA/Saint Francis)...led the PacWest in digs (124) and digs per game (7.29) during the week...outstanding defense helped HPU jump to a 4-0 start.
Katie Swenson - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 5-9, S, Bellevue,
WA/Omaha Gross Catholic)...ranked second for the week
in assists per game (10.57) in the PacWest...also ranked second in
total assists (148)...helped UHH to a 3-1 start.
Christina Villamayor - Notre Dame de Namur (Jr., 6-1, OH, Poway, CA/Poway)...led the PacWest in scoring for the week with 65 points and a 5.91 per game average...totaled 61 kills, three aces and two block assists...led the league in total kills and kills per game (5.55).
Brittney Wood - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., 6-2, MH, Metaire, LA/High School information not provided)...ranked third in hitting (.312) for the week in the PacWest...dropped 35 kills in 80 attempts with just 10 errors...helped lead Sea Warriors to a 4-0 start.
Dan Yang - Academy of Art (Sr., OH, 6-2, Beijing, China/Beijing 5th Sports School)...ranked second for the week in the PacWest in points (64), points per game (4.57), kills (58) and kills per game (4.14)...ranked fourth in hitting percentage (.291)...point total also included six block assists and a trio of aces.
