BYU-Hawaii falls to Cal State San Bernardino 3-1 in NCAA Division II West Region Semifinals

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The BYU-Hawaii women’s volleyball season came to an end on Friday, Nov. 18, with a 3-1 loss to #1 Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinals of the NCAA II West Regional Tournament.

The Seasiders battled the undefeated Coyotes in each set but ultimately fell 25-22, 25-17, 25-27, 25-20 win to end the season with a 19-4 overall record.

The two teams were tied at 20-20 with the taller and more experienced Coyotes in the first set, but CSUSB scored four straight points, two of them on Seasider errors, and put the game away.

The second game was close at 16-14 before the Coyotes pulled away to take a 2-0 lead.

BYU-Hawaii bounced back in the third set, taking a 19-15 lead before Cal State San Bernardino rallied to tie the game at 20-20.

Courtney Skaggs The Seasiders pulled back ahead 24-22 only to see the Coyotes score three straight points to serve for the match at 25-24.

A kill by Stella Chen tied the game and a block by Courtney Skaggs and Aika Becker put BYU-Hawaii at set point before Lauren Hagemeyer knocked down a kill to send the match to a fourth set.

The Seasiders took a 15-12 lead in the fourth game but couldn’t hold on as the Coyotes came back to win the set and take the match.

Hagemeyer finished with 15 kills to lead the Seasider attack.  Stella Chen knocked down 13 and added 15 digs and three blocks.

Ariel Hsu and Becker both finished with nine kills in the match. Hsu also put up four blocks, as did Skaggs, and Michelle Chen finished with three blocks to go with her 47 assists, 10 digs, and four service aces.

Losaline Pula led the way with 16 digs and Tajana Santiago added 10 digs for the Seasiders.

Cal State San Bernardino, which improved to 29-0,received 17 kills and seven assists from Samantha Middleborn and 19 digs from Morgan Carty. The Coyotes will play Sonoma State for the West Region title on Saturday night.
