Point Loma, California Baptist, Azusa Pacific & Grand Canyon within 2 points of PacWest lead

Bernadette Witz PHOENIX, Ariz. - Point Loma continues to cling to a narrow lead over several teams in the Pacific West Conference women's soccer race.

The Sea Lions lead defending conference champion California Baptist by a single point, while Azusa Pacific and Grand Canyon are within striking distance. Dixie State is in fifth place just ahead of Fresno Pacific, BYU-Hawaii and Dominican.

The Sea Lions, now 7-1-1, were impressive again at home this week with a 4-0 win over Hawai'i Hilo and a 6-1 romp vs. Chaminade.

Kelly Christenson had two goals in the victory over the Vulcans as the Sea Lions pitched yet another shutout with their stifling defense.

Ironically, the late second-half goal by the Silverswords was just the second conference goal allowed by Point Loma this season. Natalie Swift had a goal and two assists to lead PLNU.

California Baptist, in second place at 7-1-0, kept pace by picking up three straight shutout wins at home - 4-0 against Chaminade, 1-0 vs. BYU-Hawaii, and 4-0 against Academy of Art. Bernadette Witz had the lone goal in the big win over BYU-Hawaii.

Azusa Pacific - now 7-2 - also stayed close in the standings with consecutive shutout victories over Holy Names (4-0), Chaminade (7-0) and BYU-Hawaii (1-0). Grand Canyon, meanwhile, improved to 6-1-2 with back-to-back wins over HPU (6-1) and Dominican (2-0).

Dixie State had a rough week, losing at home 2-0 vs. BYU-Hawaii and 1-0 to Hawai'i Pacific. The two losses dropped the Red Storm's record to 6-3-0.

Fresno Pacific also suffered a tough loss, dropping a 3-1 encounter to Dominican to fall to 4-2-3 on the season. The victory improved the Penguins' mark to 4-3-1, the same record as BYU-Hawaii who went 1-3-0 during a tough road swing through Southern California, Arizona and Utah.

There are a number of key contests this week, including back-to-back encounters between Dixie State and Grand Canyon. The two contenders play in St. George on Tuesday, Oct. 15, then head to Phoenix on Saturday, Oct. 20.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, HPU visits Chaminade while BYU-Hawaii hosts Hawai'i Hilo. On Thursday, Oct. 18, Azusa Pacific is at Fresno Pacific, California Baptist visits NDNU, and Academy of Art travels across the Golden Gate Bridge to take on Dominican.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, Fresno Pacific hosts ART U, California Baptist visits at Dominican, Azusa Pacific is at NDNU, BYU-Hawaii travels across the island of Oahu to take on HPU, and Hawai'i Hilo plays at Chaminade.
