BYU-Hawaii beats Francis Marion, moves into NCAA II quarterfinals; HPU bounced 5-0

BYU-Hawaii moves forward in NCAA II tournament

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL - The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women's tennis team defeated 7th-ranked Francis Marion on Wednesday by the score of 5-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA II National Championship.

The Seasiders swept the three doubles matches, despite having play interrupted by a rain delay, and then took singles wins at the fourth and sixth spots to end the match.

With the win, the Seasiders improve to 27-0 for the season.

In the doubles matches the Seasiders' Elwen Li and Yuan Jia scored an 8-3 win at the first position over the sixth ranked duo of Krystyna Horakova and Jitka Gavdunova, while Jenny Chin and Wen-Lin Wang claimed an 8-4 win at number two doubles over 13th-ranked Tereza Sykorova and Sabina Baberadova.

BYU-Hawaii's Shawni Porter and Ayako Ikeda earned an 8-2 victory at number three doubles to stake BYU-Hawaii to an early 3-0 lead.

In singles play, Porter took a 6-3, 6-3 win at number six singles and Wang scored a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win at number four to give the Seasiders the match.

Francis Marion, 20-5 for the year, got a win at number five singles to prevent a sweep.

BYU-Hawaii will face second-ranked Lynn (26-0) in Thursday's quarterfinals. Lynn breezed to a 5-0 win over unranked Bloomsburg in today's opening round.
