BYU-Hawaii beats Clayton State, advances to national quarterfinals

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL - The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team defeated 10th-ranked Clayton State 5-1 on Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA II National Championship Tournament in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The win was the second this season for the Seasiders over the Lakers and was the 30th consecutive victory for BYU-Hawaii.

The Seasiders swept through the three doubles matches and then picked up wins at number five and number one singles to improve to 30-0 for the season.

BYU–Hawaii’s Elwen Li and Yuan Jia picked up the Seasiders' first point with an 8-2 win at number one doubles.

Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter then avenged an earlier loss to Clayton State with an 8-6 win at the second doubles slot, while Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda claimed an 8-0 win at the third doubles position to give the Seasiders a 3-0 lead after doubles play.

Jia earned the fourth point for BYU-Hawaii with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number one singles, and Chin closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the fifth singles spot.

BYU-Hawaii was leading in two of the unfinished singles matches when play was halted.

The Seasiders will face 16th-ranked Northwood (MI) in Thursday's quarterfinal round at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
