BYU-Hawaii’s Jia, Hwang claim Player, Newcomer of Year; UHH’s Daguio earns rookie honor

Kelsey Daguio PHOENIX, AZ – BYU-Hawaii junior Yuan Jia (Zhengzhou, China) has been selected the 2011 Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, while Seasider sophomore I-Hsuan (Annie) Hwang (Tainan City, Taiwan) has been named Newcomer of the Year.

Hawai‘i Hilo rookie Kelsey Daguio (Waipahu, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) claimed the Freshman of the Year award and BYU-Hawaii’s Dave Porter and Grand Canyon’s Greg Prudhomme shared PacWest Coach of the Year honors.

The PacWest media office announced the women’s tennis awards and All-PacWest Team on Tuesday, May 17, live during the PacWest Magazine Radio Show.

Yuan Jia Porter continued his mastery of the PacWest Conference, leading his Seasiders to their fifth straight title since the league began expanding under its current administration in 2006-07.

He led the Seasiders to a 27-1 overall record this year with their lone loss occurring in the Round of 16 of the NCAA II National Championship.

Prudhomme guided the Antelopes to a 16-5 overall record, a third-place finish in the PacWest, and a berth in the NCAA II National Championship.

In addition to her Player of the Year honor, Jia was named All-PacWest First Team Singles and Doubles for the third straight year after posting a 21-1 singles mark and a 25-1 first doubles record. She was 6-0 at first singles, 11-1 at second singles and 4-0 at third singles.

Hwang also earned All-PacWest First Team Singles and Doubles, going 22-0 at first singles and 24-1 at second doubles.

Dave Porter Daguio was named All-PacWest Second Team with an 8-16 singles docket and a 7-17 doubles mark. The Vulcans’ challenging schedule landed Daguio 15th in the region despite a sub-.500 record.

BYU-Hawaii senior Hewenfei (Elwen) Li Boud (Chengdu, China) earned All-PacWest First Team Singles and Doubles for the fourth straight year. Li Boud is 20-0 this season in singles competition. She is 13-0 at third singles, 5-0 at second singles and 2-0 at first singles. She also has a 22-1 first doubles mark.

Elwen Li Boud Seasider junior Shawni Porter (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) earned her second straight All-PacWest First Team Doubles honors following a 17-0 record this season. She was 14-0 at second doubles and 3-0 at third.

Grand Canyon sophomore Katharina Mittag (Hamburg, Germany) was named All-PacWest First Team Singles following a 9-5 first singles record. She also was 13-5 in doubles competition, including an 11-5 record at second doubles.

GCU senior Cecilia Vergnet (La Colle sur Loup, France) and freshman Frederique Van de Velde (Kapelle, Belgium) claimed Second Team Doubles for the Antelopes. Vergnet, a Second Team member last year, posted an 11-9 doubles record that featured an 11-8 mark at first doubles. Van de Velde recorded a 12-9 doubles record during the 2011 campaign.

Zora Vlckova Hawai‘i Pacific sophomore Ielyzaveta Rybakova (Kiev, Ukraine) was named All-PacWest First Team Singles along with junior Zora Vlckova (Brno, Czech Republic).

Vlckova earned the honor for the third straight season by posting a 16-1 first singles record. She also claimed All-PacWest First Team Doubles for the third straight season by posting a 20-4 mark. She was 12-3 at first doubles and 6-1 at second doubles.

Rybakova posted a 14-5 singles mark, going 6-3 at second singles and 6-1 at third singles. She was 2-1 playing in the first singles position.

She also earned Second Team Doubles honors with senior Aleksandra Stankovic (Skarpnack, Sweden) after the partners produced a 9-3 record. She finished the year 15-7 overall in doubles competition.

StankoCelina Goetti vic wound up 17-5 overall in doubles play and 14-3 in singles matches.

HPU rookie Celina Goetti (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) earned All-PacWest Second Team Singles and First Team Doubles honors for her outstanding freshman season. She posted a 10-6 singles mark and a 16-4 doubles record, including a 15-4 doubles posting with Vlckova.

Chaminade freshman Yanita Arnaudova (Hazkova, Bulgaria) and sophomore Yuko Kondo (Irvine, CA/San Joaquin) earned All-PacWest Second Team Singles and Doubles accolades. In 2010, Konda was a First Team Singles honoree and a Second Team player.

Konda finished the year 8-5, earning a 7-4 record at second singles, while Arnaudova finished the season with an 8-6 singles record. Together they brokered a 10-6 first doubles mark.

Kunkanda Phukchampa Academy of Art junior Kunkanda Phukchampa (Lampang, Thailand) earned Second Team All-PacWest Singles and Doubles accolades. She turned in a 12-4 record singles record that featured an 11-4 finish at first singles, while she teamed up with junior Laone Botshoma (Botswana, Africa) for an 8-2 first doubles record. Overall she was 12-4 at first doubles.

Botshoma earned Second Team All-PacWest Doubles after recording a 14-3 season.
