BYU-Hawaii blanks HPU 5-0, claims PacWest Championship again
LAIE, HI – BYU-Hawaii captured the 2011 Hawaiian
Airlines Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Championship
by blanking Hawaii Pacific 5-0 on
Saturday, April 16, in Laie, HI.
It marks the fifth consecutive time the Seasiders have claimed the PacWest title since the league reorganized in 2006-07.
Yuan Jia, the MVP of the tournament, defeated Ielyzaveta Rybakova 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, while Elwen Li Boud beat Celina Goetti 6-1, 6-3 at third singles, giving BYU-Hawaii the PacWest crown.
The duo teamed up to jumpstart another title run when they rolled to an 8-0 first doubles victory vs. Zora Vlckova and Celina Goetti.
Second doubles belonged to I-Hsuan Annie Hwang and Shawni Porter who outlasted Aleksandra Stankovic and Ielyzaveta Rybakova 8-6. Porter earned the Sportsmanship Award for her décor on and off the court.
Salina Aranda and Sasha Ulbrichtova helped complete the BYU-Hawaii sweep with an 8-4 third doubles victory over Carrie Shuler and Sandra Wikstrom.
