8-team PacWest Women’s Tennis Championship field set; BYU-Hawaii hosts April 14-16

LAIE, HI – The field for the eight-team Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Championship will feature all four teams from Hawai‘i and four of the five Mainland Schools when the battle for the league title commences on Thursday, April 14, in Laie, HI.

The three-day PacWest Championships will begin with quarterfinal rounds on April 14, followed by semifinal contests and consolation bracket semifinals on Friday, April 15. The PacWest Championship, along with matches for third, fifth and seventh place, will be held on Saturday, April 16.

The exact seedings and times of the bouts will be finalized next week, but the field will include reigning champion BYU-Hawaii (22-0) and runner-up Hawai‘i Pacific (13-4). Grand Canyon (14-2) and Academy of Art (9-3) also are in the mix after their solid seasons to date.

Chaminade, Dixie State, Domincan (CA) and Hawai‘i Hilo also will participate in the tournament.

BYU-Hawaii claimed all three doubles matches and captured second and sixth singles to beat Hawai‘i Pacific 5-1 and claim the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. Last year’s tournament was held in Glendale, AZ.

BYU-Hawaii’s Hewenfei (Elwen) Li (China) was named the MVP of the tournament after posting a 6-0 mark in six matches. She won all three of her second singles contests and teamed up with sophomore Yuan Jia (China) for a 3-0 mark at first doubles.
