BYU-Hawaii freshman Shih Ting Chen chosen first PacWest Volleyball Player of Week for 2011

Shih Ting Chen PHOENIX, AZ - BYU-Hawaii freshman middle blocker Shih Ting Chen (Yunlin, Taiwan/Chung Shan) has been chosen the first Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for 2011.

The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Sunday, Sept. 4, for matches contested Aug. 26-28.

Chen led the Seasiders to a 2-0 start by averaging 5.50 points, 5.29 kills, 0.71 service aces and 5.71 digs per set.

She ranked second in kill average and in scoring, and was first in digs per set for the week in the PacWest. She was fourth for the week in hitting with a .303 percentage.

Chen unleashed 37 kills, four block assists and 40 digs for a total of 38.5 points.

Haley Doerfler - Hawai‘i Pacific (Fr., 6-1, MB, Battle Ground, WA/Prairie)...helped HPU to 1-1 start by hitting .393 over two matches - second-best in the PacWest for the week...had 15 kills and four errors in 28 attempts...averaged 2.14 kills per set to rank ninth for the week...also contributed four aces and averaged 0.57 per set - fifth in the league for the week...totaled 23 points after adding a block solo and six block assists...ranked fourth in scoring for the week with a 3.29 average.

Hillary Hurley - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-2, MB, Anderson, CA/Enterprise)...topped PacWest in scoring (7.57 points per set), kills (51) and kills per set ( 7.29) for the week...helped Vulcans to 2-0 start...also averaged 3.43 digs per set to tie for sixth for the week...totaled 24 digs in two matches...hit .297 to rank fifth for the week.

Bryana Kekauoha - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 5-10, S/RH, Lawndale, CA/North Torrance)...helped Vulcans to a 2-0 start to the 2011 campaign by averaging 10.29 assists per set...recorded 72 assists over two matches.

Kyra Pelayo Pihana Kea - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., 5-5, S, Honolulu, HI/Punahou)...helped Sea Warriors to a 1-1 start by averaging 7.43 assists per set...ranked third in assist average in the PacWest for the week...tied for second in service aces per set for the week (0.71)...totaled five aces and 52 assists in two matches...averaged 3.43 digs per set - tied for sixth-best for the week in the PacWest.

Kyra Pelayo - Hawai‘i Pacific (Sr., 5-3, DS, San Jose, CA/Saint Francis)...led PacWest in aces per set (1.00) for the week...totaled seven aces and 25 digs over two matches...ranked fifth in digs per set for the week (3.57).

Courtney Skaggs Courtney Skaggs - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., 6-0, MB, La Mesa, CA/Helix)...led BYU-Hawaii to a 2-0 week...topped PacWest in hitting (.478) by posting 12 kills on 23 attempts with just one error...ranked ninth in scoring for the week (2.50 points per set)...ranked fifth in points per game (3.54) and tied for seventh in aces per game (0.50) for the week in the PacWest...totaled 49.5 points on 39 kills, seven aces and seven blocks assists...ranked 10th in hitting for the week (.240) and ninth in kills per game (2.79) in the conference...Seasiders started the year 1-3.

Kirsten Sparnaaij - Hawai‘i Hilo (Fr., 6-0, OH, De Bilt, Netherlands/Het Nieuwe Lyceum)...ranked fifth in scoring for the week after posting 3.07 points per set...totaled 21.5 points on 18 kills, two aces and a trio of block assists...ranked fourth in kills per set (2.57) and eighth in digs per set (3.29) in the PacWest for the week...totaled 23 digs in two matches.

Whitney Viveiros - Chaminade (Jr., 5-10, OH, Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalma)...helped Chaminade to a 1-1 start to 2011 season by hitting .295...ranked sixth in the league in hitting for the week...posted 18 kills, an ace and a block solo for 19.5 points...averaged 2.44 points for the week - 10th-best in the league...also averaged 3.00 digs per set to rank ninth during the opening week...totaled 24 digs in two matches...tied for seventh during the week with 2.25 kills per set.
