BYU-Hawaii’s Shih Ting Chen repeats as PacWest Player of Year; GCU’s Phelps top libero
PHOENIX, AZ – BYU-Hawaii sophomore OH/MB Shih Ting Chen (Yunlin, Taiwan) has been selected the Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Grand Canyon sophomore Mackenzie Phelps (Prescott, AZ/Prescott) repeats as the Libero of the Year as the Pacific West Conference unveiled its 2012 All-PacWest Women's Volleyball Team.
The conference made the announcement on Monday, Nov. 26, following a vote of the coaches in the league.
In addition to the Player and Libero of the Year honors, Hawai'i Hilo rookie OH Bria Morgan (Soquel, CA/Soquel) was named the Freshman of the Year, while Fresno Pacific junior MB Kathleen Anderson (Lemoore, CA/Lemoore) was tabbed as the Newcomer of the Year.
BYU-Hawaii's Wilfred Navalta, who led the Seasiders to the PacWest Championship and the number one seeding and host team in the 2012 NCAA II West Region Tournament this week, was named the PacWest Coach of the Year.
In addition to earning Player of the Year honors for the second straight season, Chen was named All-PacWest First Team for the second time in two seasons and was one of six Seasiders earning all-conference honors.
In 24 matches and 78 sets this season, Chen hit .354 and averaged 4.36 kills per set. She also totaled 381.5 points on the season and averaged 4.89 points during each set.
Joining Chen on the First Team were sophomore setter Ying Chun Chen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) – the 2011 PacWest Freshman of the Year – and junior OH Lauren Hagemeyer (Ridgway, CO/Ridgway - left photo) who earned her third straight All-PacWest First Team selection this season.
Chen has compiled 928 assists this year, averaging 11.90 assists per set. Hagemeyer, meanwhile, produces 3.88 points and 3.36 kills per set while hitting .372.
BYU-Hawaii junior libero Melanie Manutai (Honolulu, HI/Moanalua) earned Second Team honors after posting a .934 reception percentage and 3.04 digs per set, while sophomore MB Erh Fang Hsu (Yunlin, Taiwan) claimed Third Team honors after averaging 2.06 points per game and hitting .350.
Senior OH Michelle Tevaga (Laie, HI/Kahuku) was named Honorable Mention after averaging 2.66 points and 2.79 digs per set.
Phelps, who was the Co-Libero of the Year in 2011, earned her second straight honor and her second consecutive All-PacWest First Team award after averaging 5.76 digs per set. She was one of four Antelopes named All-PacWest this season.
Senior setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep - right photo) – the 2009 Freshman of the Year – claimed her third All-PacWest award and her second straight First Team honor following a season that produced 10.17 assists and 2.45 digs per set. In 2010 she was earned an Honorable Mention award winner.
The Antelopes also placed a pair of players on the Third Team in junior MB Kristen Johannsen (Phoenix, AZ/Valley Christian) and senior MB Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ/Christian).
Johannsen hit .298, averaged 3.04 points per set, and produced 1.19 blocks per set for GCU. Taylor hit .311 while posting 2.30 points and 1.03 blocks per set.
Morgan was the lone All-PacWest selection for Hawai'i Hilo after she claimed Second Team honors this year. She averaged 5.16 kills, 2.54 digs and 5.60 points per set during the season.
In addition to claiming the Newcomer of the Year honor, Anderson (left photo) was one of five Fresno Pacific players to earn All-PacWest accolades. She took Second Team honors after posting 2.38 kills, 1.28 blocks and 3.36 points per set in 2012.
Senior setter Erica Adachi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman libero Hannah Butler (Fresno, CA/Clovis West) also took Second Team accolades for the Sunbirds, while sophomore OH Rupia Inck (Uberaba, Brazil) was named to the First Team.
Inck averaged 3.94 kills, 4.47 points and 2.58 digs per set during the regular season in leading Fresno Pacific through its inaugural PacWest campaign. Adachi averaged 5.76 assists and 2.66 digs per set, while Butler recorded 5.30 digs per set.
Senior setter Emily Carroll (Billings, MT/Billings Senior) claimed Honorable Mention for Fresno Pacific after averaging 5.62 assists per set this season.
California Baptist senior OH Ingrid Carmona (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - right photo) – the 2011 PacWest Newcomer of the Year – picked up her second straight All-PacWest First Team selection and was one of four Lancers to earn post-season accolades.
Junior OH Kim McCalmont (El Cajon, CA/Granite Hills) and senior opposite Faith Steinwedell (El Cajon, CA/Santa Fe Christian) earned Honorable Mention, while freshman MB Malika O'Brien (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Alta Loma) was named to the Second Team.
O'Brien averaged 1.48 blocks, 2.27 kills and 3.38 points per set, while McCalmont posted 2.54 kills, 2.97 points and 1.24 blocks per set. Steinwedell accrued 2.33 kills, 2.99 points and 2.89 digs per set while on the court.
Azusa Pacific landed three All-PacWest selections in its inaugural season in the PacWest. Junior OH Jackie Landers (Torrance, CA/South) garnered Second Team honors, freshman MB Ashley Vander Tuig (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) was a Third Team choice, and rookie OH Joy Reinke (Vista, CA/Tri City Christian) claimed Honorable Mention.
Landers (left photo) averaged 4.04 kills and 4.26 points per set, while Vander Tuig posted 1.12 blocks and 2.62 points per set. Reinke averaged 2.89 kills, 3.32 points and 2.61 digs per set for the Cougars.
Academy of Art earned three All-PacWest selections, while Hawai'i Pacific boasted two.
The Urban Knights landed sophomore MB Lindsay Elgin (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) on the Third Team, while senior libero Janelle Burnett (Liberal, KS/Liberal) and freshman setter Rachael Smith (Clovis, CA/Clovis) were Honorable Mention.
Elgin averaged 2.24 kills, 2.88 points and 1.13 blocks per set. Burnett posted 4.64 digs per set, while Smith averaged 9.53 assists during each set.
The Sea Warriors picked up a Third Team selection in junior liberio Chelsey Buyuan (Hilo, HI/Waiakea) and an Honorable Mention in sophomore MB Haley Doerfler (Battle Ground, WA/Prairie). Buyan averaged 4.03 digs per set, while Doerfler registered 2.02 kills, 1.03 blocks and 2.67 points per set. She also hit .340 on the season.
Point Loma earned a Third Team selection in freshman OH Kelli LeClair (Yucaipa, CA/Yucaipa) who averaged 3.71 kills, 2.51 digs and 4.15 points per set.
Dominican junior Hannah Stocking-Siagkris (Ashland, OR/Ashland) averaged 2.44 kills, 2.91 points and 3.12 digs per set in earning All-PacWest Honorable Mention, while Holy Names junior opposite Rachel Vartanian (Sacramento, CA/Rio Americano) also was an Honorable Mention after recording 3.14 points and 2.66 kills per set.
