BYU-Hawaii’s Ying Chun Chen selected 2012 Daktronics D-II West Region Player of the Year
PORTLAND, Ore. - BYU-Hawaii sophomore setter Ying Chun Chen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) has been voted the NCAA Division II Daktronics West Region Volleyball Player of the Year.
The Player of the Year and All-Region Team members are nominated and voted upon by the sports information directors representing each school in the NCAA II West Region.
Schools must be eligible for the NCAA Division II post-season before their players can by considered for the regional honors.
The Division II West Region coordinator released the All-Region squad on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from his offices in Portland, Ore.
Players selected to the All-Region First Team will be listed on the Daktronics All-American national ballot with the list of final selections revealed on Dec. 5.
Chen was one of three players from the Seasiders - the top seed and host for this week's NCAA II West Region Tournament that begins on Thursday, Nov. 29, in Laie - to be named to the All-Region Team.
Ironically, she was an NCAA II West Region Second Team selection despite earning the West Region Player of the Year accolades.
Representing BYU-Hawaii on the All-Region First Team was sophomore OH/MB Shih Ting Chen (Yunlin, Taiwan - left photo) – the 2012 PacWest Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and an All-PacWest First Team choice for the second straight year.
She was the lone Daktronics Division II West Region First Team repeat selection in 2012.
Grand Canyon sophomore Mackenzie Phelps (Prescott, AZ/Prescott - right photo) – who repeated as the PacWest Libero of the Year in 2012 – also was named All-Region First Team, while BYU-Hawaii junior OH Lauren Hagemeyer (Ridgway, CO/Ridgway) - who earned her third straight All-PacWest First Team selection this season – was a Second Team All-Region player during the 2012 campaign.
In 24 matches and 78 sets this season, Shih Ting Chen hit .354 and averaged 4.36 kills per set. She also totaled 381.5 points on the season and averaged 4.89 points during each set.
Ying Chun Chen compiled 928 assists this year, averaging 11.90 assists per set.
Hagemeyer, meanwhile, produced 3.88 points and 3.36 kills per set while hitting .372 during the regular season.
Phelps, who was the Co-Libero of the Year in 2011, averaged 5.76 digs per set.
