INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – BYU-Hawaii is first and Grand Canyon stands third in the inaugural 2012 NCAA Division II West Region Women's Volleyball Poll.
The NCAA released the regional 10-team poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from its headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Top 8 teams in the final poll will compete in the NCAA II West Regional at a site to be determined beginning in late November.
The West Regional is one of eight locations throughout the country – each with eight teams - that will comprise the field of 64.
BYU-Hawaii already has claimed the automatic qualifier for the Pacific West Conference and is a win away from taking the league championship.
Through Oct. 28, the Seasiders had compiled an 18-2 overall mark and a 17-0 in-region record before knocking off powerhouse Fresno Pacific on Oct. 30 by the score of 3-2.
The current ranking coupled with the victory over the Sunbirds has strengthened the Seasiders' case to host the West Region Tournament - or at the very least a sub-regional.
The Seasiders also are one of a trio of PacWest teams that have landed in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll.
The AVCA announced the Division II Poll for Week 9 on Monday, Oct. 29, from its headquarters in Lexington, Ky.
BYU-Hawaii is ranked eighth in the nation, while Fresno Pac ific (19-1 through Oct. 28) stands 12th and Grand Canyon (20-5 through Oct. 28) is 21st.
BYU-Hawaii garnered one first-place vote this week and remained in eighth place. Fresno Pacific stepped up one slot from 13th, while Grand Canyon maintained its 21st place in the rankings.
Among all West Region schools in the poll, BYU-Hawaii and Fresno Pacific are 1-2, while Grand Canyon is fourth.
The Antelopes also are in the running for a regional bid after climbing to #3 in the West Region's first poll.
Fresno Pacific is not eligible for the NCAA's since they are in the transition stages from the NAIA to NCAA II Division II.
