BYU-Hawaii’s Shih Ting Chen earns PacWest Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week
PHOENIX, Ariz. – BYU-Hawaii sophomore outside
hitter/middle blocker Shih Ting Chen (Yunlin,
Taiwan/Chung Shan) has been selected the second
Pacific West Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for
2012.
The conference announced the honor on Saturday, Sept. 15, for the second week of matches contested Sept. 3-9.
Chen is the second straight Seasider to garner the award after ranking in the Top 5 in four different statistical categories during the second week of the season.
She ranked third in hitting percentage with a .350 mark that she compiled after recording 43 kills in 100 attempts while committing just eight errors.
She also ranked fourth in kills per set (4.30) and third in points per set (4.85) after totaling 48.5 points in a 3-0 week for BYU-Hawaii.
Her serving produced a 0.50 aces-per-set mark that tied her for fifth during the week, while defensively she averaged 3.20 digs per outing after totaling 32 in three matches and 10 sets.

Kathleen Anderson (Jr., 6-1, MB, Lemoore, CA/Lemoore) - Fresno
Pacific – led the Sunbirds to a 4-0 week by
posting a .325 hitting percentage and averaging 1.14 blocks per
set…produced 35 kills in 80 attempts with nine errors over
14 sets…totaled 16 blocks on three solos and 13
assists…ranked 18th for the week in the league in
scoring average after recording 3.18 points per set…totaled
44.5 points over four matches.
Hannah Butler (Fr., 5-7, L, Fresno, CA/Clovis West) – Fresno Pacific – outstanding defensively for the Sunbirds during a 4-0 week…led the PacWest with a 5.71 digs-per-set average during the stretch…ranked second in total digs for the week with 80.
Ingrid Carmona (Sr., 5-11, OH, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Universidad APEC) – California Baptist - totaled 90.5 points and averaged 5.32 points per set during a 3-1 week for the Lancers…ranked second in scoring average and in kills per set (4.71) for the week in the PacWest…also contributed 0.41 aces per set after posting seven in 17 sets.
Chun Ying Chen (So., 5-7, S, Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Chung Shan) – BYU-Hawaii - led the PacWest in assists per set (12.00) and aces per set (0.70) during a 3-0 week for the Seasiders…totaled 120 assists and seven service aces in 10 sets.
Haley Doerfler (So., 6-1, MB, Battle Ground, WA/Prarie) – Hawai'i Pacific – led Sea Warriors to a 2-1 week…topped the PacWest in hitting percentage for the week with a .568 mark…posted 29 kills in 44 attempts with just four errors…averaged 2.65 kills per set…ranked 11th in blocks per set (1.09)…totaled 12 blocks on one solo and 11 assists…averaged 3.23 points per set, good enough for 16th in the league for the week.
Kristen Johannsen (Jr., 6-0, MB, Phoenix, AZ/Valley
Christian) - Grand Canyon
- led the Antelopes to a 6-0 week that featured an
18-2 record in sets and an overall 10-0 mark on the
season…ranked second in hitting percentage for the week in
the PacWest with a .390 mark…compiled the average after
recording 31 kills in 59 attempts while committing just eight
errors…averaged 1.14 blocks per set after totaling 16 on
three solos and 13 assists over 14 sets.
Jackie Landers (Jr., 5-11, OH, Torrance, CA/South) – Azusa Pacific – pushed the Cougars to a 4-1 week by averaging 4.56 points per set…totaled 77.5 points on 75 kills, two aces and one block assist…ranked fifth in scoring average and third in kills per set (4.41) for the week in the conference…hit .281 for the week to stand 13th…totaled 75 kills on 171 attempts with 27 errors.
Kelli LeClair (Fr., 5-10, OH, Yucaipa, CA/Yucaipa) – Point Loma – helped PLNU to a 2-2 week by averaging 4.78 points per set…ranked fourth in scoring average in the league for the week…totaled 86.0 points on 76 kills, seven aces and six block assists…ranked second in the league in total points for the week…ranked fifth in kills per set (4.22) and 18th in hitting (.264) for the week…also averaged 0.39 service aces per set (tied for 19th).
Malika O'Brien Fr., 6-1, MB, Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Alta Loma) – California Baptist – helped Lancers to a 3-1 week with a solid all-around performance over 17 sets…led the PacWest in blocks per set (1.53) for the week after totaling 26 on 17 assists and nine solos…hit .277 after recording 39 kills on 94 attempts with just 13 errors…ranked 10th in scoring average for the week…posted 3.50 points per set after totaling 59.5…in addition to kills and blocks, chipped in a trio of service aces.
Mackenzie Phelps (So., 5-10, L, Prescott, AZ/Prescott) - Grand Canyon – topped the PacWest in digs (97) and ranked second in digs per set (4.85) during a 6-0 week for the Antelopes.
Kristen Preach (Sr., 5-10, S, Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) – Grand Canyon – led Antelopes to a 6-0 week by totaling a league-best 181 assists and ranking fifth in assists per set (9.05)…also ranked 11th in service ace average (0.45)…posted nine in 20 sets.
Kim Spring (Fr., 5-9, RS/OH, Bern, Switzerland/Feusi Bildungszentrum and Feusi Sportschule) – Chaminade – led the PacWest in kills per game (4.73) and in points per game (5.41) during a 2-2 week for the Silverswords…totaled 52 kills on 131 attempts with 16 errors for a .275 hitting percentage…ranked 15th in hitting for the week…totaled 59.5 points on 52 kills, six aces and three block assists.
Jordyn Siko (So., 5-10, S, Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills) – California Baptist – averaged 10.14 assists per set after totaling 142 in 14 sets…ranked second in assist average and third in totals assists for the week in the PacWest…Lancers posted a 3-1 mark during the week.
Ashley Vander Tuig (FJr., 6-2, MB, Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) – Azusa Pacific – helped the Cougars to a 4-1 week with a solid all-around offensive and defensive performance…hit .342 to rank fourth in the PacWest for the week…posted 34 kills in 76 attempts with only eight errors in 18 sets…ranked ninth in block average (1.11) for the week…totaled 11 on two solos and nine assists.
Whitney Viveiros (Sr., 5-10, OH/RS, Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) – Chaminade – led the Silverswords to a 2-1 week by hitting .333 and averaging 2.70 kills per game…ranked fifth in the PacWest in hitting for the week…had 27 kills in 60 attempts with seven errors in 10 sets…ranked 17th in kills per set for the week in the league.
