BYU-Hawaii repeats as champion; HPU's Horochuk wins individual title

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Hawai‘i Pacific senior Quinn Horochuk (New Brunswick, Canada/Oromocto) captured the individual title but BYU-Hawaii retained its team crown at the 2009 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Cross Country Championship in San Francisco, CA.

The 5K race was held at Golden Gate Park on Saturday morning, Oct. 31, and featured seven PacWest programs vying for the title

BYU-Hawaii finished first with 22 points after five of its runners finished in the Top 7. The entire quintet earned All-PacWest First Team honors.

Hawai‘i Pacific wound up in second place with 42 points, while Hawai‘i Hilo finished third with 99. Academy of Art (104), Grand Canyon (126), Notre Dame de Namur (151) and Chaminade (154) rounded out fourth through seventh, respectively.

Horochuk won the individual championship by crossing the finish line in a time of 18:53.8, earning All-PacWest First Team accolades.

The PacWest rewards the top seven individual finishers with First Team honors, while those crossing the finish line 8-14 are dubbed All-PacWest Second Team.

In addition to Horochuk, freshman Michelle Lundh (Hillerod, Denmark/Fredericksborg Gym) claimed an All-PacWest First Team certificate by taking fifth overall in a time of 19:28.6.

BYU-Hawaii, meanwhile, collected the remaining five First Team honors behind sophomore Lacey (Johnson) Krout (Preston, ID/Preston), freshman Lacee Kurtz (Milford, OH/Milford), sophomore Katherine Buxton (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg), senior Allison Shamrell (Gresham, OR/West Linn) and sophomore Danielle (Amparan) Anderson (Richland, WA/Richland).

Krout was the top BYU-Hawaii runner and finished second overall with a time of 19:01.7, while Kurtz placed third in the championship run with a mark of 19:12.8. Buxton was fourth overall and third among the Seasiders with her time of 19:24.5.

Shamrell claimed the sixth slot with a 19:30.0 and Anderson finished seventh with a 19:31.4.

HPU totaled four All-PacWest selections. In addition to Horochuk's victory, graduate student Mariane Uehara (Sau Paulo, Brazil/UNESP), sophomore Kim Kuhnert (Leverkusen, Germany/Landrat-Lucas Gym) and junior Amanda Tanchaleum (Aiea, HI/Aiea) each earned Second Team accolades.

Uehara finished 11th with a time of 19:46.7, while Kuhnert claimed 12th with her mark of 19:56.7. Tanchaleum finished 13th in a time of 20:17.7.

Academy of Art posted one All-PacWest Second Team selection in sophomore Denisse Correa (San Diego, CA/Mar Vista) who slipped into 14th place with her time of 20:38.5.

Hawai‘i Hilo sophomore Kirsta Andrew (Garden Grove, CA/Lutheran) was the top Vulcan runner and finished ninth with a mark of 19:37.7, while senior teammate Nina Hagemann (Mountain View, HI/Keaau) claimed the 10th spot with her time of 19:43.8.
