Art U's Bergren, Dixie State's Young earn berth in NCAA II Women's Cross Country Nationals
KAHUKU, Hawai'i – Academy of Art senior Jenny Bergren (Inglewood, CA/Beverly Hills) finished sixth, Dixie State senior Rachel Young (Holliday, UT/Olympus) grabbed eighth and Hawai'i Pacific senior Polina Babkina (Sochi, Russia) placed 16th to claim All-Region honors at the 2012 NCAA Division II Women's West Region Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Kahuku, Hawai'i.
Bergren and Young also advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship race in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 17 for being amongst the Top 3 individual runners not representing a team that is advancing to nationals.
Hawai'i Pacific University hosted the 6K championship race at the Kahuku Golf Course a week after hosting the Pacific West Conference Championship.
The Top 25 runners earned All-Region accolades, while the Top 5 teams along with the Top 3 individuals not on one of those five squads advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship race.
Chico State, Alaska Anchorage, Humboldt State, Cal State Stanislaus and Seattle Pacific finished 1-5, respectively, and will head to Missouri.
Bergren was the top finisher among all PacWest runners after she posted a 21:51.76 to take sixth out of 170 competitors.
Young was close behind after she recorded a time of 21:58.13 to earn a trip to Missouri. She led her Red Storm squad to the best finish among all PacWest schools as Dixie State finished 13th out of 25 teams.
BYU-Hawaii placed 15th, while Grand Canyon placed 17th and host Hawai'i Pacific finished 19th. Chaminade took 24th and Hawai'i Hilo wound up 25th.
Babkina posted a time of 22:15.09 to wind up 16th overall and earn All-Region honors.
